Trend Micro is saying that there is an unauthorized user logged into my wireless network.  I am sure it is someone in a nearby apartment in the complex riding my router signals.  Its encrypted but I think there are two types of encryption, mine is the older less secure IIRC.  how do I fix this.  TM gives me the option to block the user but then they ust find another way around that firewall setting..

Any ideas?

Allow only your mac address. He can spoof it but it may work

Go with WPA or WPA2 encryption.  Difficult to hack.

Go into your router the settings are in there.

In your address bar, type:  192.168.1.1

That should get you into the router.

Usually "admin" works as the username and also the password.

Okay, I went in and changed the setting to WPA-PSK

It asked for a password and i entered it and clicked apply.  Now I am on my PC and tried but my laptop wont connect now, its asking for a network key.  The password I entered from the router login page doesnt work.

You need to set up a WPA key in the router settings. The admin/password was just to access the routers setup page.

Look around for it.

Google can provide links to programs that easily circumvent MAC filtering, WEP, etc.  MAC filtering is hacked by sniffing bits and pieces of the MAC until they have it all and spoof it, i.e., make their hardware match the MAC.

If you can use WPA+PSK, do it.  Go to the vendor websites for your wireless hardware to see if updates are available.  My laptop didn't have WPA-PSK out of the box, but a firmware update added it.

If you're really worried about it, just run a CAT5 cable to where you usually use the laptop.  You don't want your IP address associated with a child porn case.

Edit: OK, I was late to the game on this one.  After you get your equipment talking to each other, disable the "broadcast SSID [network name]" function.  Change your router password from factory default.

You cannot make router changes while on the wireless network. Get a cable and plug into one of the router ports and then access the router again. Once you set wireless encryption you will need to enter a key string for the code. Save that string to enter into your laptop after you set the laptop encryption settings the same as the router..
