When I use WE to browse files on my LAN Network drive, its taking minutes to get a list of the available folders, etc.  Then every time I browse to the next level/folder, the same thing happens.  

Same thing happens when I open a File Open/Save dialog box....the first listing of drives when I click on "My Computer" is very very slow.

If I select anything on my C drive or under MY Documents, then no speed issues.  I"m guessing its doing some type of searching, but any idea of options/settings to speed things back up?

both computers running sp2 ?


should be fairly quick unless one system is running sp1  and the other sp2

You have WINS or DNS issues. Probably WINS.

If you don't know what this means, tell your network admin (and they might even know how to help you).

This is absolutely a name resolution problem.

My laptop is running SP2, the network HD is not runing Windows.  Its a Buffalo Technology Network drive running a linux flavor.

Good start to look at.  I know of WINS and DNS, but I'm no expect.  My network admin is me!  lol.  I work from home

well if it helps my linux box runs fedora core 6.   it takes a couple seconds for folders to come up as well.   it takes longer to browse windoz shares than it does the samba shares

there is a serious bug in older versions of Samba. The workaround is to use a slow enumeration mode for file shares on the network; sadly, this leads to the performance you see.
