REDMOND, Wash. – June 1, 2011 – Today, at the D9 Conference, we demonstrated the next generation of Windows, internally code-named “Windows 8,” for the first time. Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, from the chip to the interface. A Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse.

So it's going to be an overblown phone interface with a bunch of "apps" written in "HTML5 and JavaScript". Hmm...HTML and javascript, I've heard of that before...hmm...It's called a fucking website. I don't know what moron thought that your entire OS should be running shitty as slow-as-fuck javascript, but aparently they've been smoking something pretty strong at Microsoft recently.

I've been a big Microsoft fanboy for 15 years, but I'm thinking it's time to install linux.

Perhaps it's their attempt at combating the coming wave of Google Chrome computers.  IMO, this approach (web-centric, app-based, light OS) is the future for many computer users.  Maybe not for me and you, but a lot of people don't want or need a lot of what a Windows-type OS offers.  I predict Chrome laptops will slowly but surely gain market-share until they are legitimate competitors with Windows machines.  IMO. MS has already lost this battle with their failure in the phone market.  Google and Apple will be able to convert their current iphone and Android users into PC/laptop users.

If they are changing the OS in a way to head off the Google Chrome computers then they are making a huge mistake.  I have a Google Chromebook as part of their trial group.  It's about the most useless thing I have ever come across.  The people that stay on Facebook and Twitter all day updating everyone about their pathetic lives might like it but beyond that it really serves no purpose.

It's supposed to be a computer, not a journal.

Is it too much to ask that my operating system store and organize files, let me open or execute them, and manage components and peripherals?  That's all I want.  Other than that, the OS needs to stay the hell out of the way as much as possible.

I think it looks ok if they plan to use it for tablets. They need a different color scheme.

Not sure it'll make a good desktop OS though

A couple months ago, somebody that applied at the store I work for, put down "Windows 8" under the computer skills part of the application.

It's coming out in two versions, one stripped down tablet version like you're seeing here and one "full" version intended for install on PC's

I would also like it all to run locally, not everybody has access to "teh cloud" 24/7. I want to retain exclusive access to my data. It is mine, not yours to "share" and datamine.

And a little less protecting me from myself. Yes, I am sure I want to do that.... Thanks.

Still running XP here.

Some of the things I've been reading about Win 8 state that all Win 8 really does is take Windows 7 and builds upon it, adding new features and support for ARM chips.  I'm thinking it's more like a Windows 7 Second Edition than a whole new operating system.

The Portable Workspace feature sounds interesting and might solve a problem I've been trying to create a solution for for some time now.

Why would anyone want Windows? Or even anything from Microsoft.

That's halfway what I assumed, I guess I'm just jaded. I fully expect them to fuck up all the progress made on Windows 7.

Who cares if the OS isn't as solid as Apples.  I hate the look and operation of the Apple OS.  Other that people too stupid to figure out how to operate a computer I don't see why anyone would pay for any overpriced Apple product.

Because that's what developers write software for, Windows. Also I'm not going to throw away 18+ years of Windows/Dos knowledge to spend hours, days, years relearning how to do the same things in Linux.

Considering MS's track record with OS's there is a high probability that Win 8 will suck but Win 9 will be awsome, just look at the history of Windows.

3.x was ok, 95 sucked, 98 was good, ME sucked donkey balls and took it up the ass, XP was good, Vista was a steaming pile of failure, and Win 7 is great.

Wow. Just... wow. It looks like they're copying iOS, but with that signature Microsoft aesthetic.

I remember reading an article about six months ago in which the author compared Microsoft's current position to that of IBM in the late 1980s after the introduction of DOS-compatible clones - still the de-facto king of the business market but loosing the consumer/educational market.

I think that the only think that keeps the bottom from dropping out of the home computer market for Microsoft is the high price of Apple computers.

I don't have a problem with viruses because I'm not doing shit I'm not supposed to be doing on my computer that casues virus infections. I also run AV software just incase of the off chance something does get onto my computer.

As more people use iOS there will be more viruses and malware created for it. It's simple statiscits as to why there are no viruses on Macs yet.

Perfect table? Apple fails at the concept of a field replaceable battery and they believe that "No one will ever need more than X amount of storage " and failed to include a SDHC slot on the iPad.

That's far from perfect.

Edit: Lets not forget about Apple not supporting flash on the iPad either or other things that might take users away from Apple contolled content.

Learning to do cross platform development is a pretty valuable skill. It's a royal pain to set up shims and makefiles and all for multiple operating systems, but once it's all going, it's not bad.

People have been predicting that we'll all be running Java apps on remote servers for the last 15 years. It's been pretty successful on portable device and phones, but I still don't see it happening on desktops.

Do you really think MS would hobble itself by writing Office 12 in HTML5?

OSX is no more secure than Windows 7. A quote from Tyler Reguly, senior security research engineer at nCircle "The idea of the consumer being protected due to lack of market share is fairly obtuse..........."

There can't be any Virus's on Apple hardware because of the way the OS is written, It's virus proof. You would know that if you took the 10 minutes to go into an Apple store and ask them about it.

No one needs a replacement battery, you also don't need any more storage. If you did need these things Apple would of given them to you.

MS is following market trends, nothing more and nothing less.  Look around you, upscaled phone operating systems are the way the market is going.  The Chrome OS is little more than a browser that runs without an OS to support it.  I know people who no longer have a traditional computer, they've dumped them in favor of smart phones, tablets and game consoles.

If you know how to make money in the computer/tablet/phone arena better than MS does, I suggest you submit a resume.

What the fuck are you smoking?

My firm currently uses a lot of specialty industry specific software, all of which is windows specific and all of which plans on being windows specific for the foreseeable future according to thier representatives.

Its one thing to say "Oh Adobe's new product has a mac version" well thats all well and good but 99.99% of the software world is not adobe, and those companies churning out specialized software that entire industries can't do without are not going to make windows versions anytime soon.

Yeah you have office software and creative suites, what about the people that need industrial automation control software, or actuarial valuation software, performance engineering software, etc etc etc.

Quick go find an application that can help calculate heat transfer in metals and composites for a mac.... can't fucking do it. But you bet your ass you can find something like that that runs on windows.

PC's are ubiqoutous not because they are easy to use, but because they can do nearly everything you need of them. Macs are nice but they are still specialty and luxury hardware. The people making software that people use to WORK on are making it for windows. Accept this fact and move on.

I think this "cloud centered" thing is going to blow up in everyone's faces.

The accumulation of raw  power represented by people tracking what goes in and out of everyone's cloud is astounding.

For me, I like having my documents, settings, photos, etc., right here thank you very much.

For me, the "cloud" is a convenient "spare hard-drive" for storing (encrypted) stuff I don't want to lose if my box fails.    Its not a great reinvented way to do things.   The cloud gives the gate keepers more control.    Why do that?

Because that's what developers write software for, Windows. Also I'm not going to throw away 18+ years of Windows/Dos knowledge to spend hours, days, years relearning how to do the same things in Linux.
