A couple of weeks ago, I started up my PC and Windows wouldn't load.

Instead I got a windows recovery error identical to this...

Launched the startup repair (ran for about half an hour), and it ran fine.

Next day, same error message only this time it was unable to be repaired.

Reinstalled everything from an image backup and it's been running fine since.

This morning, started it up, and got the recovery error message again.

Ran the repair option (this time it took about 45 minutes), and now it's fine.

I'm running Kaspersky AV (which I trust is decent enough to catch any malware or virus problems).

What should I be looking at here to correct this?

F12 to BIOS and run diagnostics.

can you check your logs?
they may point to an event...perhaps disk is failing?

Midget porn is the only answer. Need to wipe hard drive and re install windows.

serious answer if you have ran the repair utility and it is still doing it either an important registry value or file got corrupt or your HDD is starting to fail. In that case its time to swap to an SSD or new machine depending on how old it is. If your mobo, processor and ram are decently current just get a new drive and re-install windows.

I'd be looking  at the HDD.

I got the same thing with some bad ATI video drivers a while back.

First I'd like to point out that I know almost nothing about the inner workings of a computer.  Then I'd like to point out that it's probably your hard drive dying a slow death.

Or the RAM.  Run memtest86+ and make sure it all checks out.  I've had a bad memory stick that kept corrupting Windows files to the point it wouldn't boot.

Checked under Administrative tools > Component Services

And Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Shit ton load of logs and log entries, but I have no idea which ones would contain the info I'm looking for.

Edit... the HHD about to fail was one suspicion I had, but since I've had no other problems or warning signs, I kind of dismissed
it at first.

Schedule a disc scan. My Computer, right click on your C drive, Properties, tools, schedule a full disc scan at next start-up

you could sort by event type...bring the criticals up top... (kinda like sorting by price high to low ).but hopefully Diagnostics will tell the tale.....  FPNI.

Memory is possible.  Hard drive failure more likely.

As others have said, it's probably the hard drive going bad.

My money is on Hard Drive failure in your near future.

Run Diag in the BIOS if it hasn't already been suggested.

Me'thinks the gentleman is on to something.  Probably time to upgrade to an SSD drive anyway.
If you get a new drive now you might have enough life left on the old drive to recover your important data from it.

Probably hardware or driver related. Do you remember Windows installing updates recently?

Right now from what I've been finding out on my own and asking here and elsewhere,
a bad HDD is looking like the likely culprit.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Last time I ran updates was after I ran the image file from a couple of weeks ago.

Right now I have 38 important updates and 6 optional that should be installed, but I think I'll hold off
until i get this problem solved.

I got the same last week.

I cleaned the motherboard out with air, and re seated the ram chips and HDD cables.

It's running ok now.

If you actually have a bad HDD, replace it with an SSD.
It made my computer seem 5x faster.

Single best improvement ever.

Samsung 850 EVO is one of the top SSDs.  And it includes FANTASTIC software for cloning your existing drive.
