The real question is...will it be worth dumping XP for?  I'm still on XP and I'm tempted to remain that way for at least another year or so...

Im not going to dump XP until support for it officially drops (much like what happened for 98).. I figure by that time 7 should have a more reasonable price tag..

Unless you want to have something that needs Vista or higher, it's not really worth it.

It's very good.  As one of my engineers said "It's Vista, but it works"

Good to know, if it says "Windows XP or better" just install Debian.

I'm still on XP for Windows gaming at home, I plan on skipping Vista altogether. If I need to do anything besides game I use Debian.

It always starts out being priced a lot. Wait a few months and it will be $120 or so, just like Vista and XP.

It is worth dumping XP for Vista 64bit. Very stable for me. If you play games, then DX 10 and DX 11 are worth it. If you are on 32bit and do lots of video, photo editing ect. then 64bit is worth the upgrade (can use more RAM). Windows 7 is basically a Service Pack for Vista, except they are charging for it when it should be released for free. The reason they are doing it is because Vista has a bad reputation even though it runs fine. It may have been different the first few months of release, but it is fine now.

But if you do plan on upgrading, just wait for Windows 7 to drop in price.

If all you do is email and internet stuff, then XP with a basic dual core CPU and 3GB of RAM is plenty.

Upgrades hell.  A full version of OS X is $129.  No need for a previous version.  And there aren't any piecemeal versions either.  Just one, full-featured product.

Windows 7 is great.  I am running it on my work laptop and my wife's personnal laptop now.  The only question I have is whether or not I can just slap a new license into the RC 7100 and keep everything as it is, or will I have to reinstall.

I run Vista on my work PC and it sucks the ass. I have Dell with XP on my "family computer" at the house. I have a new Mac Pro I use for video editing and audio recording as well as a  Macbook I use to surf the web. When the Dell shits the bed It will be replaced by a Mac Mini, it does any of the home stuff the wife needs with ease and less bull shit. Basically it uis just used for e-mail, charging the ipod and copying songs, and surfing the web anyway.  I will have to stick with a PC on my work computer as I run QB Enterprise for my company and it will not run on Mac. I hope 7 is better since Windows is what I have to use for my company.

I keep a windows 2K box around and a XP box, just in case of, well, not much.

For the other 50 or so boxes, Debian for a server, Mepis for a workstation.

Requires a little adjusting but the freedom is well worth the fight. Apply this anywhere you look.

My laptop with vista runs ok, but there are some things I hate.

My friends laptop came with an earlier version of vista.  He has a small piece of tape on his screen to act as cross-hairs when we play battlefield 1942 because they won't show up.  A lot of other people with that game and vista have the problem.  I don't for some reason.  He's also only running 1gb of ram and will not spend money on more.

Most people will be great with the $119 upgrade to Home Premium.  FWIW - Windows 7 RC has been excellent - very stable and runs fast.  A big improvement over Vista.

The full version of Windows 7 Home Premium will be priced at $199, with an upgrade from Vista or Windows XP costing $119.

The full version of Windows 7 Professional will be $299, with upgrades priced at $199.

Windows 7 Ultimate will be $319, with the upgrade priced at $219.

good lord, if all you do is email and internet stuff a 1GHz pIII w/ 1GB of ram and win2k is overkill.  throw in a refurbed 15k scsi hdd setup and you will never know the difference between it and a dc w/ 3GB of ram..., probably be snappier

i agree it does run well, i would say better on the same hardware as xp which is a surprise.  once it goes to ~120 or so i will pick it up.  for $200+, xp will work out just fine.
