[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Why do our goldfish keep exploding? (Page 1 of 2)

| We've got a bunch of goldfish in the pond in our yard. About every other month, one swells up to gigantic proportions and eventually explodes. They've been doing this for years. WTF? |

Dropsy ETA: Beaten by 25 seconds. Cleaner water would be the best start. I assume you have koi? Keep a close eye on their scales. If their scales start to protrude out so that they begin to look like a pinecone ( or maybe a saw blade) from above, that is a sure sign of dropsy. There is medication you can get them. |

Dude, like, have you ever thought to get your water tested and, like, maybe not eating or drinking anything unless it comes from an outside source? This is sound advise. In some parts of the country, the water supply contains high concentrations of explosive minerals - Tannerite immediately comes to mind, although there are others. |

How many goldfish in how many gallons? You can have too many you know.
Dropsy is not fun or exciting to see. I find it somewhat gross. We had fancy gold fish in an indoor tank that had it. They looked like pinecones. They got euthanized and we gave the rest back to the fish store before we killed them all. |
