Maybe that. Let's also ignore that fact there probably wouldn't have been a war, or even a Hitler, had it not been for the Soviets and their antics in the 1930s. That, and OP should go look up just how much war materiel the USSR received through Lend-Lease. They absolutely could not have survived the war they helped start, had it not been for US support. |

Because German military logistics depended on over a million horses and they assaulted the USSR in the winter? Yeehaw! |
| because we wish they had lost more. if WWII had ended with Hitler and Stalin exhausting all their armies and all their resources and each finally killing his "socialist brother" in a fit of rage because their utopian dreams didn't work as planned, it would have been one of the greatest turning points in humanity. If they could have taken all their minions and fellow travelers in the US, UK, Canada, etc with them, all the better. |

FDR desperately wanted to be dictator with unlimited power. He desperately wanted the USSR to own eastern Europe. He desperately wanted Germany to be reduced to a agricultural society. He desperately wanted to be king. For that matter, he desperately wanted Japan to attack Pearl Harbor so that he would get into the war against Germany, and put Japan on the back burner. |

| Over 40% of axis resources were used in the air war over western europe. Most of the Luftwaffe was focused over europe allowing the russians to have air superiority in the east. The air war was clearly a second front before and after D day. The western allies had nothing to be ashamed of. |

| Russia didn’t beat Germany, the US beat both Germany and Russia. Sure we had help from our allie’s, but it was our production that won the war. Both Brezhnev and Khrushchev said Russia was beat and if it wasn’t for US aid (pre lend/lease) then lend/lease they would have collapsed. What people don’t understand or were taught we gave Russia, planes, clothes, weapons, trucks, food, fuel, trains, we even sent a complete tire plant over. We gave them raw materials, steel the actual list of what was sent is absolutely insane. |

Russia was going to attack Germany when they were ready. It was only a matter of time before these two opposite political factions went to war. Hitler thought the timing was right so he jumped first. Russia was caught off guard but they had been planning on taking down the Nazis way before the actual hostilities occurred. |

Without Lend-Lease it would have definitely been far uglier (maybe more like Russia-Ukraine today for a lot of it, except the Germans really were at the end of what they could plausibly control and eventually they almost certainly would have collapsed) For the general subject of this thread: I would make this part of a book list for people who want to be modestly literate in miltiary history: In short: the Soviet Army absorbed enormous losses in the first year of the war, but got better within like two years (as their enemy was grinded away) and then executed probably the most spectacular examples of armored warfare in history. (BAGRATION 1944 and then Manchuria 1945 - though again versus hollowed out enemies). This not known in the west because the Allies like to focus on Allied military history, the fact that the Soviets kept this almost all in Russian and away from outsiders (and for that matter politicized it too), and that any post-war western histories on the Eastern Front relied on German generals who wanted to exonerate themselves - for bad reasons (yah we didn't know about the Einsatzgruppen lol), for meh reasons (yeah we were better but we failed because there were too many of them and Hitler was stupid) and good reasons (I know this would be a hot take in GD ... but the fact that we reconstituted the German army to be the largest Army in western Europe in less than a decade, necessarily with Wehrmacht COLs and below, and integrated it into a democratic nation and into the Allied military structure is a far bigger "winning" than anything the government has done in this century). The thoughtful replies here give me a little more hope for the future of our country, than some of the replies in the Ukraine thread.![]() Summary: they don't get credit for being absolutely evil and careless with the lives of their own citizens, never mind what they did to half of Europe for the 45 years after. They were always a shitty Pan-Slavic police state held together by violence and coercion, and it's a shame that ANY of our resources went to help them, even if they tied up a bunch of German resources during the war. |

The eastern front was a meat grinder. Most of the men were dead. The Russians who lived systematically rapped the women and children left alive. Anyone who spoke of the Russian abuses were sent to gulags and labor camps never to be seen again. Everyone just shut up. America didn’t want to expose it becuase they would have looked bad also. They even killed Patton because he was going to air it all out and start speaking. |

I wonder how it would have turned out had Hitler not sent his troops to Africa to help the Italians. No desert Afrika corps, have all those troops that were in that Africa sideshow on the Russian front. 33k more men, early when I think it may have made a difference there. |

| Because our western narrative of history doesn't give attaboys to bad guys. Children taking history class in countries like Russia and Central Asian states see us in the same light, and only teach the mistakes and weaknesses of the United States military, such as our loss to the superior, brave, and valiant north vietnamese. |

IMO, they should have made a full court press to take the Suez Canal and moved NorthEast & then East. |
