Ok,I ditched my AR but I've got ideas on something...strange.

The regular AR upper-what kind of shells can it handle? I know I can fool with the bolt Etc. but just how much shell can I stuff in there??

And before you ask I'm eyeing the single shot lower with no mag well so mags aren't an issue.

Also gonna leave the gas system in-it'll eject the shell and (maybe) lock back.

And the upper I'm looking at is the DPMS low-pro.

Just a mad inventer's raving's here.

With so many calipers now for the AR platform (.22 cal to 50 Beowulf) why would you want to take a chance of sending yourself to the hospital or morgue?

Cut down the .600 Nitro Express and shoot it single stack through a magazine. People will bow before you.

Hmmmm maybe just stick with something like .458 SOCOM?

My plan is a an AR single shot...thing

But with enough horsepower to justify one round,a .223 is a varmit gun, also it'll have "auto eject"

*goes to check prices on .458 Socom barrels*

So may I ask why they sell single shot lowers? I suppose you can just stick a regular AR upper on it or am I wrong?

*goes back to look at .458 uppers*

You *can* shove a .50 BMG in there as a single shot.  Don't do it unless you have state of the art materials and machining equipment and have a death wish.

ETA:

Or you could buy one from some company that makes one.

I'm just looking at what's out there already,I know we have .458 Socom,.50 Beowolf (or however it's spelt) 6.8 rem,6.5 grendel,.223 and 7.62X39 and a few others I'm sure.

So I'm just wondering how big a round the standard AR upper can take without switching to the AR10 type upper, and since it's a single shot mags are a non issue, just pop open the action and drop the shell in.

And a gunsmith will do the work on the barrel and whatnot.

A .458 SOCOM actually looks good, gonna read more.

Well, there is a company that makes a single shot, bolt action .50 BMG upper, here.

But .458 SOCOM is a great choice.  It fits in a standard magazine, so it's no problem for it to be semi auto.

That's the weird part of my idea,I'm going to take a regular upper and stick it on the single shot lower,it'll kick the shell out and lock open (I think) then you drop another in and hit the bolt release BANG! loaded.

What I'm asking is how long a shell can you stick in an AR upper? sans a mag? just a one shot at a time set up?

No I don't want to blow myself up but just wanna see what's possible.

Anyway the .458 looks like a little thumper so it may be a project to look at-maybe.

Sure that should work.

After googleing 'single shot AR-15 lower' there are a few California legal lowers that are going for about $180.  They don't take a magazine, but look like they can take a LPK and buffer tube kit.

But as a cheaper option I would just get a regular lower, and only load a single round in each magazine.  You can feed a new round in through the ejection port, and the wider port on the .458 SOCOM will make it that much easier.
