So I went to the LGS this afternoon to get my grandson a new scope. He has a Bushnell Banner 3x9 and it gets a foggy look when you zoom especially above 7. I was going to get a Bushnell Elite. I had him look through a couple scopes and without telling him which one I was going to get he picked the Bushnell.
Anyway, I know the manager real well and he suggested looking at another scope. The Vortex Diamondback. He claims they cannot keep them in stock and it appears every bit as bright as the Bushnell. Anyone have experience with the Vortex line? ETA: I am going to go ahead and get him the Diamondback. I am putting it on his Rugar M77 Hawkeye 7-08 compact for his deer gun so, 3x9x40 or 4x12x40 Same price for either one. Poll Inbound |
| Vortex is good to go. My buddy is a Vortex dealer and he has them on all his rifles an has had no issues. They hold up well to his higher recoiling rifles and the glass is very clear. Vortex as a company is also great to deal with and have an excellent warranty if you would ever need it. I bought a second hand Strikefire(early model) and had some issues with it and it was replaced with a new one, no questions asked. |
| I have a Vortex Viper and a Bushnell 3200 Elite. I prefer Vortex. IMO, the clarity, magnification adjustment, turrets, and warranty are all better than the Bushnell. I haven't tested the durability of either scope. The Bushnell is 6 years older and I haven't used a newer one so it's not a completely fair comparison. |

I have 3 scopes and 2 pairs of binos and a rangefinder all vortex and it ranges from the low end to the razor hd stuff all of it is outstanding best warranty if it is broke the will fix or replace it Vortex GenII Razor HD 4.5x25-56 $$$$ I was shopping those a while back and it seems to me that for an asian import the price on those isn't really in line with reality, maybe because its new? For that kinda money you could get a domestically manufactured us optics or german made s&b for just a bit more. If I'm paying in the ball park of 3 grand for a rifle scope might as well go with the established standards. |

I have the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40. I just had it out hunting in PA for the past three days where we had rain pretty much non-stop. It held up great - didn't fog or show any ill performance when exposed to the elements.
The glass is great, but I wish I would have dropped a little more coin for a Vortex with better eye relief. I don't have problems with getting smashed in the face with recoil on my .308, but I notice once you get outside of the 'sweet spot' any small deviation of your head to left or right can result in loss of accuracy. I noticed this quite a bit when I was first sighting in my scope and was having trouble getting consistent shot placement. I'm not a bad shot, but I really had to focus on maintaining a tight cheek weld and keep my eye directly in line to keep my shots inside the bullseye. |

How far away are these deer going to be? My stand in the woods has shots of 150yds max with shots most likely in the 50-60 yard range and use a vortex viper 1x4. ETA: With the choices available I would go with the 3x9 unless the primary use is going to involve some very long shots.
