Ok I made a boneheaded move today and got loaded with viruses, I got the pc to boot into safe mode and started to run avg, I left the room for a second and as I came back in I saw a popup message on the screen but before I could read it the pc shut off.

Now when I turn it on it powers on, makes it to the Win XP boot screen. but before XP loads it just restarts itself, it does this in safe mode as well. I guess my question is am I screwed? I really dont want to reformat yet as I haven't been backing my files and stuff up on a regular basis, as well as losing my firefox bookmarks. I'm running Win XP media center.

If I take it somewhere would someone who does this for a living have a chance of fixing it without losing all my stuff, or at least be able to backup My Documents before reformatting?? I guess I'm semi computer literate is there anything I can do?

ETA: The virus that Mcafee identified was Prockill-DJ or something close to that
if it helps.

Jeez, the least you could do is share with us HOW you got infected so we don't do the same thing.  What did you do?

Been using limewire for a couple of years to get songs, friend asked me today for a Word 2003 product key.... I've been telling people for awhile not to download crap like that, well I was tired and semi distracted and downloaded a "product key" file myself, was then also dumb enough to open the file, hence my current problem. My own stupidity caused this now I  just wanna fix it.

I would be happy if I could get it to boot for 5 minutes so I could pull some important stuff, then I would be happy to reformat but I don't want to do that just yet.

is the system shutting off on the same file when its scanning or close to it.   if it is you could have a hardware problem as well.  I would think bad sectors on a Harddrive.

bitdefender
youcan install this is doesn't use realtime protection so it won't conflict with avg

avg spware  installed this too?   make sure you manually update all of them before you do the system scan!!

its highly suggested that you turn of system restore BEFORE you do virus scans as well SR

if you decide to take it in....  specify you have data on the harddrive and you want it backed up.  if they huff and puff, take is somewhere where they know what they are doing..  its not hard to backstuff up on the machine.   i can get data off a drive thats locked, passworded, encrypted to a certain degree..   so it CAN be done
