I want to upgrade from Movie Maker, I'm looking for a video editor with a good range of features and effects that doesn't cost an extreme amount of money. I'm willing to pay a good amount, but I'm not looking for top of the line software here. Any suggestions?

I recently went through the same thing. I was editing some footage of camping trips we had taken. I downloaded and tried various entry level packages and ended up using Magix Movie Editor Pro 14 Plus. You can download a trial version that's good for 30 days. I highly recommend it for function and usability.

I like Pinnacle Studio 12. $40 for the bare bone version at Best Buy. Studio 12 Ultimate is on sale for $99. I just used it last weekend, worked well.

Sony has a dumbed down version from their Vegas its called Sony movie studio. For the money you will not buy a better program. You can buy it at Best Buy for under $100.

I use Vegas professionally and have for the last 6 years. The major difference with their professional app and the consumer application is the # of video and audio tracks you can put on the timeline. So if your just doing some home movies with titles etc. it will work fantastically.

Sony Vegas is arguably the most intuitive video editing software on the market. This means it is the easiest to learn.

I edit on a professional level. In my edit suite I use Adobe Premier Pro as part of CS3. Since  I am currently on windows platforms, this is my best bet. Once I switch back to Mac it will be Final Cut Pro.

On my laptop, for knocking around and doing tests, I use Pinnacle Studio. Great software for the price, you can find it at like Best Buy. Cheaper yet if you can find it through online vendors. Powerful, intuitive and a lot like Avid. Highly recommended.

Same here, this man speaks the truth. I used to use AVID, but am now all FCPro on a mac.

CS4 will be out in January.

Premier Pro is a $700 application. Sony Home studio is a consumer application for the casual home user making home movies for under $100.

I read the OP say hes no longer happy with Windows movie studio. So logically where do you think he should go with this?

A $700 professional Application vs a $60 application for home users?

Adobe Premiere Elements

Under $100 and does 90%+ of what Premiere Pro does.
