Just saw on O'Reilly that the Michigan Education Association is trying to get a $10000.00 "severance" payment for a teacher convicted of serial rape of a 12 year old.  I do not know what sentence the guy got, may be life based on the part I heard flipping channels.  My question is, HOW do you try to justify tax-payer dollars going to a guy in prison for child rape?  The head of the union would not answer any questions.....

A number of possibilities pop to mind....

1. I dunno how the teacher's pensions are set up in Ohio, but there may be a percentage that's paid out of the teacher's earnings that may have been paid in. They may be trying to get out what he's paid in himself.

2. Right or wrong, the union is obliged to represent and defend the guy in all matter involving his employment. Asking for a $10K knowing it will go nowhere could have simply been a token effort to show they're doing their job.

3. Asking for $10K to walk away from a retirement may well be cheaper in the long run that fighting the guy in civil court later. Keep in mind dude's gonna have lots of free time in prison to do just that.

Teachers supporting a fellow teacher.  The union probably wants the membership to believe in a "slippery slope" argument, that it could have been them and may be next time unless they all stand together.  The teachers that think this guy should be hung out to dry are probably not friends of the union and may be afraid to appear on camera.

Old story, but if he worked at the same school I did I'd spit on him.

Sort of irrelevant, but, guys like that are usually once the other inmates find out what they're convicted of. Guess there's an unwritten rule about that sort of thing.
So in any case, this guy is still screwed...
