I'm not a cop, nor a super secret delta ninja squirel.

Just your average Joe...

Anyways, a while ago I took a class in self defense using a handgun taught by a local cop.

One thing that stuck with me...this little scenario:

You got your gun drawn, pointed at me...

I got mine in my hand down by my hip....

Your job is to watch me, and shoot me when I raise my gun and point it at you...

Thing is, I have already made the decision to blow you to hell...

So I raise my gun to put your lights out....

Now, remember, you already have your gun pointed at my chest.

Bet YOU get shot.

Try it with a buddy...with a finger gun...or an airsoft gun...

It's a real eye opener....

I once looked into becoming a cop...no way in hell would I want the job...I admit...I don't think I could handle it...dealing with scum suckers on a daily basis with the media watching your every move?...and the pay is total shit....No thanks...not for me. But I do have a lot of respect for people who are in that line of work....they must put up with a lot of crap.

After I tell you to drop it and you don't, I shoot.

Part of the point of training and learning, is to deal with counterintuitive situations like this.

Holding someone at gunpoint is no substitute for COVER.  If nothing else back up and increase the distance... distance = time and time is your friend.

True...

I bet you the average Joe thinks he will have the time to react in the scenario I described...

I sure did...then I learned otherwise...

It's definately good to get some training and practice...especially if you intend to carry a handgun.

Kind of changed my reaction a bit when I hear about police shootings in the news too...

I had the opprotunity to attend a few Law Enforcement seminars with a Guy that looked exactly like John Bunnell, but it wasn't.
He could shoot a person who was holding a gun to his head, before they had the opprotunity to pull the trigger. It all has to do with the  intent and determination of the person in action.

Yet, he also stressed never attempt to out draw a criminals trigger squeeze, and to be very aware of filipino knife fighters and the 21 feet rule.

This was back in the mid 90's

As a regular joe, if you have a gun pointed at someone, you better be prepared to shoot and be legally justified if you have a gun pointed a person.

Try it again with your friend and get them to have to put a sentence together. That REALLY slows 'em down.
BTW ... "Google" Tueller Drill.
Congrats for spending your own $ on training.

Stay safe

This.

The Tueller drill is an eye opener. We did it using simunitions (defender) and chalk knives (attacker).

Just remember - shot does not automatically equal incapacitated. Thus the mantra "shot 'til he stops".

This, to the millionth degree.

If you can distract someone by making them talk, their reactions will be slowed A LOT.

I was so excited to see that strategy employed at the end of "Taken" when the father waits until the Sheik holding a knife to his daughter's throat just stands there, aiming, until the Sheik starts talking, then pulls the trigger.  I poked my wife in the ribs and said "see, see, it works."
