Using Truecrypt 7.1 with Windows 8 on my new laptop.

I encrypted a thumb drive with no issues.

Now when I go to open the volume in Truecrypt, I get a Windows message saying the thumb drive needs to be formatted and when I cancel the message, the computer does not recognize the thumb drive.

I tried getting rid of the drive letter assignment, but then I can't find it when I try to open the volume.

Any ideas?

I get that message when I try to open the volume without putting in the password first.

I don't even get that far.  I click on the thumb drive and get the message.  Once I cancel the message, it won't find the thumb drive anymore.

Click on the Truecrypt icon in the system tray and select the device to mount from there.

Ya'll know TrueCrypt has been compromised, right?

Hell, even their own website has instructions for migrating to BitLocker.

Which is absolute junk - if any encryption product is compromised, BitLocker is compromised.

You need to open truecrypt and mount the usb drive to a drive letter first. These guys on here are idiots.

Technically BitLocker isn't compromised. It has a backdoor which is part of the product specs.

So they built it that way on purpose.

Don't get what you mean.  Any attempt to select to thumb drive results in the format prompt which when canceled, renders the thumb drive invisible.

I've been using Truecrypt for years, just never with Windows 8 and never tried to do this with a thumb drive.

I suppose if I could create a container on the thumb drive, and not encrypt the whole thing, Windows would still recognize it.

Truecrypt did not give me that option, it was all or nothing.

No mother fucker, open true crypt, click on a drive you want, and then click on "select device" and then elect the usb drive as a device. It's not hard.

I use it every day with Win8. It sounds like your drive became unformulated for some reason. You might try formatting it again and see what happens or try another drive.

Sorry in that case, respectfully,
No motherfucker, you need to select a drive that you want and then click on select device, when a new window Pop up, select the usb drive as your device and then click okay.  Then click on mount.  Enter your password. And then you're done motherfucker. Respectfully yours.

You can tell windows to ignore flash drives so that it doesn't prompt. Not sure where but I have seen in it 8.1. And TrueCrypt 7.1 was the last safe version for the not as informed.

Oh I understand him just fine and is offering the solution but he isn't getting it. I'm pretty sure you don't know whqt the fuck to do either.  When you encrypt a whole device, of course windows is not going to recognize it anymore and will ask you to format it.  It doesn't matter if it's sindoss 8,7, or XP.  IF you read the truecrypt FAQ it clearly stated this.
