Hey guys,

Got a new Tommy Gun!  It's the M1, not the Deluxe.  I am having difficulty loading it.  The manual says to hold back on the bolt while pressing the "trip".  However; it doesn't seem to want to lock the bolt back.

Anyone out there with some advice?

Thanks!

Oh man. For your first post you call your M1 a "tommy gun".

Seatbelts, please.....

Nothing..some are unaware of the proper nomenclature of the Thompson sub-gun.
can"t help with the loading problem...not all that familiar with the Thompson.

GD usually has a tough crowd. You should get an answer but you'll have to wade through some crap. I'd check in the technical forums.

Welcome though...

Edit the title so it's more descriptive.

I thought I would see this here.  No offense OP.  Also, I know nothing about Thompsons.

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Are you encountering extreme resistance in pulling the bolt back, or a simple failure to engage the lock?  I had a semi-auto M1 which was very difficult to operate without taking the rifle down, cleaning and lubricating--and this out of the box new.

I later swapped it for a 1927-a1 which seemed to operate more easilly for me.

Anyway, try cleaning factory grease from the bolt and rail surfaces, then lube!

Best,

Ed

Yes, the bolt is pretty hard to pull back but, I can do it.  Once back though, I push up on the thing it says will lock the bolt but, the bolt slides forwards regardless.

I'll take it apart anyway and see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Welcome aboard Ed!

And nice score on the M1 Tommygun. Once you get it going I'll bet she'll be a hoot to shoot!

And don't mind the flak, it's the norm for GD. Isn't allowed in the tech forums.

Welcome to the site, my buddy has one of the 1927's and it is great fun, I'm sure you'll love yours. They are like shooting a really heavy .22 that hits harder downrange, I actually was getting tired before I finished the 50 rd drum. The 30 round magazines weren't so bad. I know, I know, more PT.

the new semi ones are a pain in the butt to charge, i had to put a extend handle on mine from thompson, it helped allot.

did you modify the mag catch to run the mags? or are you going to modify each mag? the mag catch is the way to go, its easier.  it does get a little better after you shoot it some. also watch for the ejector backing out, mine did within 200 rounds, i just unscrewed it and bet it a little to add more tension and screwed it back it.

Put an empty mag in it & pull the bolt all the way back.  If it doesn't lock open, ya know you got problems.

The magazine catch doesn't need modification.  Semi-auto mags have the oval shape needed to catch.  Full-auto mags have the round hole that needs to be dremmeled to an oval shape to engage the semi-auto magazine catch.

The rifle is fine as it is from the factory...at least the one I purchased in 1993--regardless, I would not recommend a modification to the firearm, only to full-auto magazines which cost ~ $10 at a gunshow and are easilly modified.

A great forum for all things Thompson, they deal mainly in originals but they tolerate us semi-auto owners as well. Look thru old threads and you will find more than you ever wanted to know...

Sorry guys, I'm new to the site.  But, in my defense, I never imagined a site dedicated to guns would not get confused with a Subject of "Tommy".

Next time I'll put "Tommy, the gun" so it'll not be confused with "Tommy, some guy".

You're good.  Welcome to the site.  GD is the bullshit net of arfcom--almost anything goes and a thick skin is somtimes required.

Some of the technical forums have more info and less jackassery.  The one below is for multiple weapon types.  Welcome again.

Out of all the forums on this website, you chose to post in the one where we talk about everything else.  If you want a serious discussion about firearms, post in one of the firearm forums.  There are a lot to choose from.

Why lock the bolt back on a semi tommy,  insert magazine. Pull bolt back, bolt goes forward loading the round.  No reason to do this with an open bolt.

If a semi 27 loading a drum then the bolt needs to be back so the drum can slide in the slots from the side, but not needed for the stick magazines.

They make an insert to push up and operate the lock open for drum insertion but it fits where the stick mag goes so it never is used with the stick magazine.

Well, that did it!

It was a pain in the a$$ to take apart, everything was incredibly tight.  But, after apart, cleaned, lubed, etc, it runs nice.  It is still kinda hard to charge but, does so.  I am going to order the extended handle.

Thanks for everyone's help.
