Are they worth it?

The protection plan I'm considering is a lifetime protection for the tire.  If the tire sustains unrepairable damage, the company will replace the tire.

I'm buying a set of 5 tires at $359 each (BFG All Terrain T/A K/O, 37"), and the tire protection plan is $49 each for each tire.  I asked if they could do anything better on that price and the guy told me since I was buying 5 tires, I'd only have to buy 4 plans and he'd throw in the 5th one for free.  I only go offroading maybe twice a year.

probably a prorated warranty like on a battery

Absolutely. It adds something like $12 or so per tire.

$50 per tire is ridiculous.

Plus, the plans will be protrated, so you may still end up shelling out $200 towards a new tire, especially given how fast good off road tires last.

I just spend $1300 on Wrangler DuraTracs. I passed.

I got Road Hazard 5 years ago when I bought new tires.  Caught a nail and had it patched for free.   It was a good deal for me

I'd just patch it myself, but the tire OEMs all stipulate that a patched tire has reduced capabilities (lower speed rating, load rating, etc...)

The tire protection plans are great if they're affordable, otherwise if you don't get it and use the tire, a factory defect could be claimed as a road hazard screwing you out of the original tire warranty.

Only if you are going to be using them in an area that is likely to result in tire damage.  For your needs?  Don't bother.

That's some serious cash for tires!!

I get it even on my tires for my daily driver.    It's always been worth it.    I've always had to get enough flats fixed that the cost of those

repairs would have been greater than the cost of the extended coverage.

At $50/tire that's a bad deal. In my whole life I've only had 2 totally unrepairable tires. One total blowout and a nail thru a sidewall. If you really want the peace of mind, shop around and I'll bet another dealer will give you a better out the door price on the tires and warrenty. That deal should be more like $10/tire.

That said, my buddy bought some run-flat tires for his 'vette and it's a good deal for him...NO REPAIRS ALLOWED on those tires...yep, one nail and it's a new tire.

I drive at most 6,000 miles per year on this truck.  It's not a daily driver.  I can patch a tire if need be, so I'm not worried about that.  I guess the part that interests me would be if I were to suffer sidewall damage while offroading.  Or if I had a blowout or something.  But neither of those have happened to me....yet.

I think if I did a risk vs. benefit analysis here its sounding like I should pass on the plan, at least for that price of $49 per tire.

I've always come out ahead with the road hazard.

On tires like yours, absolutely worth every penny. For the $40 Sumitomos that are going on your Hyundai, probably not.  Discount Tire has a great replacement policy that's worth the money if you're buying expensive tires.

It is an insurance plan.  Statistically - they don't work to the favor of the customer; otherwise they wouldn't be offered.

I've never had a need for them - but some have.  Again...statistics.

When walmart offers it with free rotations, at $10 per tire, tehn yeah, go for it.  $50 is a whole other planet.

I ALWAYS bought the $12.00 package whenever I bought tires. The first time I decided it was a waste, I ruined a brand new tire THE NEXT DAY!

The only time I didn't buy protection I got a piece of wire that punctured the tire through the sidewall about a week after buying it.    I ended up buying another tire.  They did me right though as they sold me one tires worth of protection but it covered all the tires on the car.  $49./tire is a little steep.

We passed on it. Wife got a nail and the dealer told her it was to close to the sidewall to repair, 1" from the sidewall. Took it to Costco and they repaired it for free.

Bought my last set of tires at Costco, they include flat repairs and rotations.
