I am attempting my first ceramic tile job in one of our bathrooms.  I took out the toilet because it is a sort of pink color and I hate it.  My question is should I lay the tile first the put in the new tile or put the toilet in first then tile around it.

I will be renting a saw to cut the tile but I am not sure how precise my cuts will be since this is my first attempt.

Tile first, then toilet.  Angle grinder works great for cutting too.

Before, get your flange riser inplace now too. A 1/2" riser should be about perfect if you're using 1/4" cementboard.

You can also make your curved cut with a saw if you dont have a grinder. Draw your curve and cut down to it in 1/4 to 3/8 passes. and just break the pieces away as you go.

Well that was so much fun.  Actually the angle grinder worked great for curved cuts.  Sure, I had to make about 3-4 per tile to get it right but it looks ok.  I think this will be added to the list of jobs to hire someone to do along with drywall.

Ive always done the toilet last. I use Hardy backer down first then quickcrete the tile to that. Then double up or tripple up the wax rings as needed to to get the toilet to fit flush with the tile and not leak.  Thats how I have always done it and works fine for me. Everyone has a different way of doing it though.
