Several other forums I belong to, which are otherwise far inferior to ar15.com, have a thread merge function.  When can we expect one on arfcom?  Many good posts are lost when the superfluous threads get locked.

How would a "thread merge" function work? Would all of the posts from the locked thread just get added to the open one somewhere?

Is this better than just adding a link to the locked thread within the active one?

Yes, the thread merge functions on other forums I've seen add all the posts from the dupe into the main thread.  The posts are inserted in the time order that they were made, so they're interspersed with posts in the original thread.  It's pretty seamless and works very well.
