1. Why are additional books considered so important when even the Gospels record only a small fraction of what Jesus actually did?

- We cannot imagine how much has gone unwritten. Since Christ knew exactly what was necessary for us to know, what motivates religions to treat additional writings as essential when Jesus Himself has simplified what is required of us? For John wrote:

There are many more things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written. (John 21:25)

2. Has not Jesus wisely chosen exactly what information we need?

- He knows that knowledge can stir up sin within our hearts. We naturally desire for Him to reveal more than He has chosen to reveal, and so we often reach for additional books and teachings. Yet what if the only thing some of these pursuits accomplish is to increase our accountability before God? For Jesus said:

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. (John 15:22)

- Perhaps we should be more grateful for what Christ has chosen to tell us than anxious about what He has chosen to leave unsaid.

3. Here is what you should “know”

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to “KNOW” the love of Christ which surpasses “KNOWLEDGE”; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:17-19)

4. Here is the work you should do
Jesus replied,

“The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” (John 6:29)

- If even the canonical Gospels contain only a fraction of what Jesus did, why should anyone assume that salvation depends upon mastering large collections of additional writings? The One who knows all things has already chosen what is necessary for us. Therefore let us devote ourselves to believing in Him and knowing the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge.

With Love,
Jesse

Be a humble fisherman……Repent and be truly sorry for your sins and thankful that the shed blood of Jesus covers them. Your faith is sufficient.  Beyond that  the rest doesn’t matter.

Salvation requires very little knowledge.

But, God repeatedly tells His people to study His words, hide them in our hearts, grow wise in them, etc. So, the what you should know from the OP is not what a Christian should stop at.

One of the best known verses on point is
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

I’d be afraid to say I fully know the love of Christ that can be understood from the canonical scripture, or believe that I'm ready to move beyond it. Were you implying something different? I shared the instruction on how to reach the fullness of God, what does it look like to go beyond that?

I find interesting the difference in Protestants and Catholics.

Catholics are encouraged to read the Bible, but they are discouraged from "isolated" or purely individualistic interpretation. They are expected to read it in context with the historical guidance of the Magisterium (the Church’s teaching authority) to ensure they do not misunderstand complex theology. Because of this, Catholic Bibles are legally required to include commentary and explanatory footnotes.

I find it interesting how differently two groups of people can interpret the same information over a long enough period of time.

As the OP questioned, we know several men have written commentaries and translated the scriptures. And, if those men were asked and honestly answered, I believe they would say they were ever learning and seeing more as they studied the Word over and over for themselves. Pride or humility? The HOLY SPIRIT doesn't need man's additions or religions, man needs taught by the HOLY SPIRIT. I would say what is already recorded in just even the KJV translation can not be exhausted in this lifetime. Go deeper with a born again Hebrew scholar interpreting the Hebrew if you desire. Only One Way to receive discernment. Now and forever it's all about your relationship to the Almighty GOD and His Word. Is it not?

Jesus didn't write any scripture at all and only the gospels record His teachings as He said them.  The rest of the New Testament is how the Apostles are implementing and teaching the gospels to the faithful.  And with the death of the Apostles the inspired scripture is complete according to the Church, but why should the teaching end there?  Why would the story be over?  Why couldn't the Church go deeper into the word of God and discover more deeply an understanding of what God has revealed to us?

I just posted some of this in my daily thread, but intentionally simplifying the Church's doctrine on Christ and the rejection of Church authority is how Mohammed formed Islam and made it so attractive to the masses.

Just as you don't need to know all of the ins and outs of a hospital or have a medical degree to be healed there - you don't have to be a well studied theologian nor do you have to understand every nuance of doctrine to be in a state of grace, that isn't the point at all.  Leave that burden to the Church, who the Holy Spirit leads into all truth.

What He says:

Matthew 11:25-27
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Religious knowledge (what we call knowledge) contrived by man isn't a requirement to know Him. His name is above every name... think about that.

It is funny, though, when it comes to puffy religious knowledge this reminds me of the Forest Gump qoute:

"I'm not a smart man... but I know what love is."

Jesus is LORD; He is all you need.

I called on the name of the Lord and He came to my rescue.

Are you saying it is wrong to know more about God and dive deeper into the faith?

It's like hearing protestant leaders telling their flocks not to learn too much and to stay away from history and early Christian writings because they might become Catholic if they do.

The same playbook Mohammed used.

Be being filled with the Holy Spirit. Be a fruit bearing vessel. Love is the first fruit of many fruits listed in the scripture that is of the Holy Spirit, if you're truly born again from above by the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit that raised JESUS from the dead.

I was addressing this statement

I am not challenging the desire spoken for us in Ephesians. I may have misread your intent being that the quoted passage is all you need to know.
I’m saying that is not a complete picture of what a follower of Christ should know based on what the Bible says in whole. It’s a piece if we are looking at a life that is being sanctified.

Do we want to know God, ...then we must know the Son of God, Jesus.

Jesus, He is the living Word of God.

Reflecting on the OP, and I was led to Psalm 138.

Then also this morning,
the thread has brought to my rememberance the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes.

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “all is vanity!” ~ Ecclesiastes 12:8

OP you have proclaimed the truth in love. God is Love. Let us rejoice in the truth. Thank you.

---

I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.

All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth,  and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD.
For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.
The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love,
O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
  ~ Psalm 138:1-8

I will trust Him.

Do you know what GOD has said about good works? It is The Holy Spirit that provokes and leads us because of grace.

I'm so thankful I have a good woman at home.

I feel like there is a lot more to the Gospel.  What about baptism?  Do I have to be baptized?

What are you missing?

More Love, more power. More of Him in my life. (see 2 Tim 1:7)

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Jesus, He is the baptizer of the Holy Spirit.

This is the good news, freedom in Christ.

We all fall short of the glory of God, I would say I'm missing quite a lot!

Oversimplifying Jesus doesn't bring anyone closer to Him.  Saying "all you need is: (fill in the blank)" or Sola ________ is a corruption of the faith given to us by God.  Of course you can say, "Love Jesus," but then what does that entail?  It's a partial truth that can lead people astray; Jesus gave us a lot of conditional commandments among other things.

Give me that old time religion

Boy, if you had only known me, that man is dead. I have a testimony.

The only condition for Jesus to save is to believe on Him. Don't be stuck in religious requirement(s) or routine. He wants you to know Him. Jesus is a person and He came to save us.

What He says:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1

Jesus is the Son of God, He won't lead you astray. I'm clinging to him by faith, not my religion.

Why do men want to over-complicate a relationship with God? Do this, don't do that, perform this etc. My relationship with Him isn't based on my performance. He did not die for that! Remember the 3rd day?

My encouragement is this:
in your private time, get closer to Him. Draw near to Him, call, cry out to him from your heart (inner most being). He will reveal Himself to you. When is the last time you heard His voice?

John 3:17
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Romans 5:8
... but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The old is gone. I am a new creation in Him. There's no going back.

Oh, thank you Lord. You are merciful to me.

Yes, we all fall short of God's glory.
He loves us still. Believe on Him!

Jesus is Lord.

Please, tell me about it. Jesus is a Jewish rabbi, isn't He?

I'm adopted then, a son, Abba, my Father is God.

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

Freedom in Christ is the good news you are missing.

You have said,
"So there IS more?"

"I feel like there is a lot more to the Gospel."

My question for you:
Is there more to the gospel than Jesus Christ? Ask yourself, what am I clinging to?

Yes, there is more Love for us.
His Love is eternal.

His tender loving mercies endure forever. Praise Him! When you have Jesus, you have everything.

This is what the OP is talking about.

Our knowledge or what we as men call knowledge falls short.

We only need to know His Love.

Ephesians 3:19
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

More love, more power, more of Him in my life.

Love is the greatest.

The thief on the cross was not. His faith alone in Christ, his pure heart in asking for grace from the Lord your God was all it took.

I think we often fail to acknowledge the inherent simplicity in the reality of God's grace and Christ's sacrifice for us. It is such an anomalous concept to our simple and sinful minds that we insist there must be more to the equation. Thus, we seek more knowledge... refusing, on some level,  to accept God's grace for what it is.

Sometimes that path leads us further from God. Sometimes it does not.

We seek to replace God's gift, grace, and Christ's blood with human understanding... and you must be cautious to not lead yourself away from  God's kingdom.

I dont have an answer for the questions posed in this thread... all I can do is rely on God's grace and the love of Christ, not deserved as it is.... God's word and fervently guard my faith even if I dont understand aspects of it.

To those who have gone before us. May we earn what they have given.

Are you a thief dying on the cross next to Jesus?  Or some other extraordinary exception?

Jesus gives very direct commandments, and very specific if/then commands.

That is a fair question. There is no harm in knowing Him, however,  there is a cost.

So, Yes, I do want to know Him more. We are to follow Him daily.

Yes, you can know Him personally.

It was in the quiet of the night, the Lord spoke to me when I was distressed and deeply hurting. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Many other moments that I cherish with Him. He showed me His love. He wants to know us.

Remember what Paul said about His relationship with His Lord, to know Him more.

I do long for an intimacy with my Lord Jesus.

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable to his death, If by any means I may attain to the resurrection which is from the dead.
Not as though I has already attained, or were already perfect; but I follow after, if I may by any means apprehend, wherein I am also apprehended by Christ Jesus.

And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Therefore, if God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.”

So if you could read commentary on Holy Scripture that builds upon centuries of wisdom and takes you deeper into an understanding of it and deeper into the knowledge of Christ, why wouldn’t you?

There is more Love.

So...  what am I supposed to do?

Be being filled with the Holy Spirit. Be a fruit bearing vessel. Love is the first fruit of many fruits listed in the scripture that is of the Holy Spirit, if you're truly born again from above by the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit that raised JESUS from the dead.

Where is that in the Bible?  And what are the other fruits?  How do I become born again?  This sounds to me like His grace is not sufficient if I have to do things.

Philippians 1:11, Philippians 1:6, Ephesians 5:22-26.
Do you know what GOD has said about good works? It is The Holy Spirit that provokes and leads us because of grace.

I'm so thankful I have a good woman at home.

I feel like there is a lot more to the Gospel.  What about baptism?  Do I have to be baptized?

The thief on the cross was not. His faith alone in Christ, his pure heart in asking for grace from the Lord your God was all it took.

Are you a thief dying on the cross next to Jesus?  Or some other extraordinary exception?

Jesus gives very direct commandments, and very specific if/then commands.

Sir. We are all extraordinary exceptions to God's grace and Christ's salvation.

None of us earned it. None of us deserve it. We are all equally sinners before the Lord.

And those specific things from Jesus would be the word of God, which I, admittedly clumsily, said we should rely upon.
To those who have gone before us. May we earn what they have given.

Aren't you missing the entire point of the OP. You can know Him personally. Jesus is the living Word of God. I trust Him.

Have you considered?

Romans 8:38-39
.... For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am settled, secure in His Love. I trust Him.

He has given us His Holy Spirit.

Are you convinced or do you know Him?

You don’t think you could learn anything from any other Christians?  You alone have achieved it all, a full understanding of Scripture?  That certainly explains why you talk to people here the way you do.

Again, you miss the crux of the matter. 'Christ in you, the hope of glory'

I do know His love and I want to know Him more.

I gently confront you with the truth, that Jesus Christ is in you. Do you accept that Jesus Christ is in you? Do you pass the test?

2 Corinthians 10:7
You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, so also are we.

2 Corinthians 13:5-6
Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?
But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test.

The Holy Spirit is teaching us to love one another. We are to love like Him. This is how we learn from each other, faith works through love.

That's how we know Him. God is Love.

1 John 4:9
By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

The WORD is not enough for some. Weak faith and religion, JESUS disciplined those on these matters. Has your righteousness exceeded those of the Pharasees and Saducees?

I'm Pentecostal because that's the church we went to when I was a kid. The 2 Pastors (son and Father) and the head Deacon were family. Dad was best friends with the Pastor and the Deacon's sons since childhood. I don't agree with all the doctrines that they have but then I don't agree with some of the doctrines that other denominations have.

I would be quite hesitant to make these claims, if I were you.

You say the Word is not enough for some and that we have weak faith. So then, which is easier to say?

1. These crackers and grape juice memorialize our Lord.
2. This is the Body and Blood of our risen Lord.

Because it seems to me you lack the faith to accept the miracle that is the Eucharist, where those of us who receive it with faith experience actual Communion with our Lord, the Word who became flesh and joined man to God.

We don't get to pick and choose what doctrine we agree with and don't. Thats why the Church has a teaching authority to bind and loosen what the body must believe. Its the pillar and bulwark of truth. Its very peaceful not having to sift through what is correct doctrine and not.

Jesus actually says you must repent, be baptized, eat his flesh, obey his commandments, do the will of the Father, and have faithfulness to the end to be saved.

But why do all that when one has easy believeism.

Which one will you believe?

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death

CCC 1863
venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God’s grace it is humanly reparable. “Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.”

First, I find it absolutely hilarious that people are taking half a verse and part of a paragraph and trying to form soteriological arguments from them.  Kind of fits with the theme of 'proud religious ignorance' going on in this thread.

Second, neither are in conflict with each other.

I don't believe in your religion man. You can be hesitant, I will not. I believe JESUS and receive His Word.

John 1:1-34. Meditate on this, who is the WORD? Then onto John 3:1-15.
JESUS the WORD said, see verse 3.) "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of GOD."

Matthew 5:20  For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter in to the kingdom of heaven.~ JESUS
Do you know what this means?

My faith is in the cross and blood of JESUS. I was born again by the HOLY SPIRIT. When I take communion, I do this in rememberance of HIM. JESUS is my righteousness and my sabbath rest, Relationship not ritual.
 Where is your faith?

John 16:5-15...verse 13.) Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, "He will guide you into all truth:" for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsover He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.
1 John 2:26-27 These things I have written unto you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. But the annointing which you have received of Him abideth in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same annointing teacheth you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him.

If I were to guess what they infer “religion” to mean; an hierarchical authoritative structure with guidelines, rules, schedules, etc. “organized religion.”  They just call the Church “religion.”

But they don’t actually reject religion, they just reject the Catholic / historical Christian religion.  They have their own Christian religion.

Religion is broadly defined as an organized system of beliefs, practices, and worldviews that connects humanity to the spiritual, sacred, or divine. It generally provides a moral framework and answers fundamental questions about the purpose and origin of existence.

Surely they wouldn’t deny religion and advocate an anarchic faith.
