I don't mean to be disrespectful but a Medevac Helicopter seems kinda cheap. Like I said not to be disrespectful but I would think they could get assistance from another LE Agency and use their Helicopter. That would seem more appropriate. |
Yeah, to me that is disrespectful to the deceased, but maybe that is LEO custom????? |
Now with that said I thought about it after I posted this and maybe he had some kind of connection to the Med. Flight Service and that would be entirely appropriate. It's like the stories I hear today of Veterans who pass away and they can't find a Proper Military Bugler to plays TAPS at the Funeral so they play a tape. It's kinda cheap I think and doesn't fully show the respect that they are due. Here is info on the Officer. He died of a Heart Attack during a Charity Football Game last week. Deputy's funeral draws officers from across the state Reported by ABC7 News Posted on: Saturday, March 29, 2008 FORT MYERS: The funeral for Lieutenant Mark Niedermeyer, the Lee County Sheriff's deputy who died playing in a charity football game, is now underway. Law enforcement officers from all over the state came to Fort Myers to show their respect for the fallen deputy. Niedermeyer's funeral was held at the First Christian Church in Downtown Fort Myers. There, hundreds of friends, family, and colleagues came to say goodbye. "We're grateful for the opportunity to have called him a friend," said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott. Other deputies in attendance called him a mentor and a good father. "In these past few years, he constantly reminded me that although the job was demanding, I needed to put my family first. He was a shining example of that," said Major Scott Ciresi of the sheriff's office. Niedermeyer's daughter Cydney told us her dad was the coach of her soccer team and she says she will always give her best because of the lessons he taught her. "He didn't care if we won or lost as long as we gave it our all," said Cydney. When he died, Niedermeyer held the rank of sergeant. But in death, he was promoted to Lieutenant. The 44-year-old was playing in that charity football game between the Lee County Sheriff's Office and firefighters from all over the county. It was the 11th Annual Charity Bowl between the two teams. The event was held at the Lee Civic Center to raise money for families of fallen heroes. ![]() |
| I don't see a problem with using a medical helicopter in the flight. It shows emergency services unity and respect. Around here, if something happens to an emergency responder, be he/she a police officer, firefighter, EMT, paramedic or whatever, all the emergency services come together and unite in an effort to honor the fallen. |

Disrespect?! You do realize the money, time, and effort in arranging something as seemingly simple as a formation overflight at a specific time? 3 turbine helicopters to boot? If nothing else consider this, that medevac helicopter and its operators care enough to likely fly a Part 91 non-revenue, and non-essential, flight out of pocket in order to participate in a flyover at this man's funeral. My guess is that his family and friends appreciate it. It is a great respect no matter what the type of aircraft are, regardless if it's a dissimilar formation or operated by different organizations. How anyone could convey this honor as disrespectful is truly beyond me. |
| I agree the "disrespect card" shouldn't be played here. LEOs, Fire, and EMS all work together closely. Not to mention he died during a charity game between Fire and Law Enforcement. I wish I would have got better shots, but I was driving down toward my house when they flew over. At least I had my camera with me. The flight formation was very tight and deliberate. Nice to see respect shown. |
