I really like the new 5s.  The design looks much better in that size than the new 7s.
Now when the new 6s come out, and then the new M6.... watch out.

The new 5s are bad ass. I can't wait to drive the new M5. There is something about waxing sports cars in sedans that appeals to me. I've got an Impala SS, but would kill for an '05 M5.

Maybe you're right.  It's all a matter of perspective.

But at least with the eurocars, you aren't getting a rebadged econo car with a new 'luxury' name.  For instance, I'll never understand why people will $10K+ for the same car with a Lexus (Toyota), Acura (Honda) or Infinity (Nissan) badge on it.

Different strokes for different folks.

No, I just think it's pathetic that a man would have that attitude about another guy because he disagrees with his choice of interests or can't afford the same, or whatever may be the case.

Good point, but you get your money's worth with most Japanese cars. With Euros, you pay more than the Japanese car price, but get less reliability. At least that's how I see it.

I'll stick to my Lexus. Why? because it looks better than Toyotas even though theyr'e basically the same car. I wouldn't mind paying more for luxurious features. I still get my money's worth with the reliability.

But, to each his own. I put more emphasis on reliability when selecting a car. Some care more about prestige and the handling of a car. Some care more about power....etc. I'm not bashing, I'm just trying to explain why some people might thing that BMW's aren't worth the money.

6/22/2004 6:05:15 PM EDT

A couple of years ago when I was shopping for a car, I test drove a 3-series with great expectations based upon all the hype.

I was let down.

The handling was good...but not great in my opinion.  The manual transmission...based upon my recollections...was quite good.  Power was lacking.  Engine was rough.

Then I test drove a Nissan Maxima.  Handling was not as good...but it was a much larger car and fwd.  It offered a 6-spd manual which the BMW did not have...though admittedly not as crisp as the BMW.

Then it comes to the engine.  This is where the Nissan shines.  The VQ3500 is the smoothest engine I have ever experienced.  To be honest, it is too smooth in that you cannot entirely rely on audible feedback to detect shiftpoints when you are running hard until you get really used to it...but you still have to be carefull of where you are in the rev range.

And, the '03 Maxima was, if my memory serves me correctly, 10,000+ less.  Moreso if you were considering a 330....and in a straight line...the Maxima will probaby beat the 330....though driver skill takes into play in this regard.

Bottom line?  Don't disregard the Nissan Maxima.

I dont know if I'll ever appreciate a car like that but it reminds me of something I saw today.

I saw a guy in a brand new saab(similar class car) convertable at the light after work. He had the top down talking on the cell phone. The funny part was he had black leather gloves with cut-off fingers. It was the highlight of my trip home

Ok, just a quick search resulted in an approximate price of the M5 of $70000.  Now, take my $15000 Mach 1.  Drop $20000 and I will eat any M5 for lunch and still have time to chew on my toothpick.  And I'll still have $35000 left to spend on my Cobra kit car that the M5 won't be able to touch either.

wow, never thought I'd have this many people reply to a thread I started. It was inspired by the 747 thread and 556 thread.

I'm not a fan of the newest 5-Series. I still like the E39s.

Anyway, I picked up on a 2002 325i last year at a steal. Really impressed by the power and handling, but then again I was driving a rice rocket before (Integra GS-R, all stock).

Starting to save up for that M3...

Saw a pack (4) of those driving down the 101 and 405  a couple of days ago, must have been doing testing as they were instrumented like lab rats, had scratched paint jobs (one even had a flimsy hood held on with D-pins) and sported manufacturer's plates. Definitely bigger than the previous model and looks a lot like a modernized 67-69 Mustang. Wonder if you can get the GT40 engine...

I dont know guys, I've got a 1992 BMW 525i(e34)  its only got a chip and sticky tires(turbo is coming, moo ha ha)  and I go smoke ricer honda's and v6 mustangs all night long at the local street racing spots.  its a 3600 pound sedan that corners better than most domestic sports cars, seing as how I kill Z28's and older Vettes in the twisties.  When I'm pushing the 600hp mark within the next few months, I'm going to go hunt me some E39 M5's and maybe a Z06 or two.
