They are making a prequel movie for The Thing movie. It is supposed to be about what happened at the  Norwegian scientific camp when they
found the creature. Release date is April 2011. I liked the John Carpenter version. It really freaked me out when that head sprouted legs
and started running around. IMDb
They posted a synopsis at the reelzchannel.com. Not a lot of details so I don't think there any spoilers.

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.
Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.
When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

The Thing was a wonderful and frightening film.
I can only hope they do it justice.
The addition of a female lead will certainly introduce some useless romantic subplot.

I really liked Carpenter's remake. I remember at the time I was wishing they would go down into the alien ship and look around. Maybe we'll get to take a look at the ship at least in the prequel.

Or at least a gratuitous T&A shot.  She better have some nice boobies if they do .

This is going to be so much better than an original idea.

It'll suck. Just like every other movie that tries to cash in on a classic. The original will remain one of the best special effects horror movies for years to come.

Want a good example of a sequel to a classic that blew in ways I can't even begin to explain? American Werewolf in Paris. London is a the horror classic version of Stripes.

Do us all a favor and leave it alone.

Don't forget that Carpenter's film is already a remake.

The Thing From Another Planet is considered a classic science fiction film and one of the best films of 1951.
Carpenter's film is a pretty faithful remake.

The John Carpenter version of The Thing was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, watched it a bunch of times. I liked the movies in the late 70's-early 80's... like Halloween, Phantasm, the first Terminator, Commando, Re-animator, Bloodsport, etc......
