Hypothetical: your workbuddy that you have turned to the dark side has approached you to make up his collection. For whatever reason that wouldn't apply to you (space, wife wears the pants, tin foil hat surveilance, whatever) he has locked it to ten firearms: 6 longarms, 4 handguns. Applications will include general recreational use, home defense, and possibly CCW. There is no price limitation, but the class limitation is Non-NFA. What would you assign him? Longarms Ruger 10/22 12 gauge (pump or auto) AK Variant AR AR #2 or .308 Battle Rifle (M1A or FAL) Bolt action in .308 Handguns Ruger Mk II or Colt Diamondback 1911 (semi custom) Smith K or L frame in .357 Wondernine (BHP suggested, otherwise what fits his hand best: Sig/M9/Glock) |
|
Longarms: Ruger 10/22 Semi auto 12 gauge, w/ multiple barrels, 18", rifled slug, 28" 20" AR 14.5/16" AR Ak-47 Bolt action 30'06 (better bullet weight options with the '06 than 308) Pistols: Some type of .22 semi auto .45 (Glock, HK, 1911 whatever) 9mm (Glock, Sig, HK whatever) .357 revolver Compact version of the .45 or 9mm for CCW use |

Longarms Ruger 10/22 with an extra .17hm2 barrel and nice glass 870 with several barrels of differing lengths Underfolder AK AR15 (with 1,000 different uppers) M1a Rem. 700 in .308 with very nice glass Handguns Kahr PM9 1911 Glock 20 with .40sw barrel Ruger Blackhawk in .45lc |
|
Longguns: 1. AR-15, 16'' .223 2. Ruger 10/22 w/C-more on it. Fun little gun to terrorize cans with. 3. Rem. 700 in .308 4. Remington 870P MAX 5. Remington 1100 Tactical 6. AR-15 in SPR form. Handguns 1. 1911 (Kimber or Springfield Armory) 2. Glock 17 3. Glock 23 4. Glock 27 |

I'd have to insist on 6 handguns and 4 long guns. AR (16"-18") Ruger 10/22 Remington 870 (combo with 18" and 26" barrels) Bolt action .308/.30-06/.270 (Rem 700 or Win 70) Glock 19 or 26 Ruger MKII or Browning Buckmark 1911 S&W 638 or 642 DA 4" SS .357 (686/GP-100/etc) pocket gun (Keltec .32/.380 or Colt Pony) Now why someone would do this to themself I can't understand but if I had to for some insane reason I could live with this collection. |

Every gun owner needs at least the following. A handgun suitable for defense. A semi-auto rifle suitable for defense. A bolt action rifle suitable for hunting. A shotgun suitable for defense/hunting. A .22LR rifle or pistol, preferably both, for cheap practice and learning the fundamentals of marksmanship. Per the limits of this thread (6 long arms, 4 handguns) here are my recomendations. Longarms 1) Colt LE6290 with Aimpoint (barrel replaced with an SDI Midlength) 2) AK74 with Kobra sight -or- a second AR 3) Savage 110 in .308 with scope 4) Remington 870 (riot gun) 5) Remington 870 (bird gun) 6) Ruger 10/22 Handguns 1) Reliable semi-auto pistol that fits him well. 2) Copy of #1 3) S&W .357 Magnum (K or N Frame pinned and recessed) 4) S&W Model 41 (.22LR) |
Whoopsie - I saw the "non-NFA" thing, but thought he meant non-full auto. I suck at reading ![]() In that case, I'd just replace the SBR with another 14.5" AR (let's say a lightweight middy from CMMG) |

Personal preference is what really counts. What works for one person might not work for others. Handguns. A good full sized defensive handgun such as a 1911. A good concealment handgun. A .22LR pistol for training and light game hunting. A deep concealment handgun. (Or a heavy hunting revolver, depending on the user’s needs.) Rifles. A good 22LR for training and light game. (10/22 works great for this) A light “patrol rifle” such as a 16” AR or M4 clone. (M1 carbine works for this role too.) A heavy battle rifle such as an FN-FAL or AR-10. (M1 Garand is an option here.) A heavy scoped bolt action rifle in either .308 or 30-06. (Remington 700 is good, but there are plenty of other good options.) A good lever action brush gun in 30-30 or 44 Magnum. (or a heavy lever action in 45-70 for those living is grizzly/sasquatch country.) A 12 gauge pump shotgun with multiple barrels for bird hunting and whatever else it is people do with shotguns. (For people like me who don’t really like shotguns, get an AK, SKS, or military bolt action instead.) |
Why have two seperate shotguns? Get a 12 gauge 870 and swap out choke/barrels. |

Longarms: (1) Self-Defense Rifle (AR-15, any variant) (2) 12 Gauge hunting shotgun (pump, semi-auto, over-under, etc.) (3) Large caliber hunting rifle (30.06 or greater) (4) Target Rifle (.22, or another AR, anything relatively cheap and comfortable to shoot) (5 & 6) Whatever sport he thinks he is going to do the most. Dear hunting? Maybe a nice .243. Big Game? A nice large magnum. Cowboy? A nice lever-action. Three-gun? A nice race rifle. Pistols: (1) Full capability self-defense pistol (HK, Glock, Sig, etc. Can be compact so long as not a supercompact like a USP compact) (2) Snubby revolver for concealed carry when full sized is impracticable. (3) Camp Gun (.357, .44 mag., etc. For being in the backwoods) (4) Target Gun (.22, 9mm, whatever is comfortable and cheap to practice) |

Long Arms: 1.AR variant of choice 2.AK variant of choice 3.Hunting shotgun (Rem 870, etc) 4. A .22 LR rifle of choice (Ruger 10/22, etc) 5. A .30-06 hunting rifle (Rem 700 or Savage 110), more versitile than .308 Win. This rifle can also be used in a sniping role/support role, too. 6. A .223 hunting rifle (Rem 700 or Savage 10) Handguns: 1. Combat handgun of choice (Sig/9mm or 1911/.45ACP) 2. Combat revolver of choice (Mod 686+ in .38/.357) 3. A .22 pistol (Buckmark, Ruger, etc) 4. Hunting revolver in .44 mag (6in barrel) I think it is important to be versitile. Having six combat rifles isnt the way to go, IMO. Ditto wth having four combat handguns. I have spoken. |
