My company slowing down.  BUT-  Instead of laying people off, they are now allowing us to take unpaid time off without consequences.

ETA-  Its working really well for both the employees and the company.

I have local ties to 3M and wasn't pleased to here they are doing a bunch of laying off too.

I hate to say that I honestly believe by this time next year, we'll be at 7-8% unemployment.

Wow. This one must have slipped under the radar as I have not heard coverage of nearly 25000 people being laid off there.

In the first few months of 2009, the retailers will be on the news every other night cutting people big time.

The only companies doing well right now and actually hiring are Hormel (Spam), Wal Mart, and McDonalds.

As an employer, I'm trying to do the things I can to be sure that my people keep their jobs. Seeing things like this makes me nervous... but we're doing well so far.
Of course, I employ 3 other people full-time, and 4 others part time, so my situation is a little different.

Yes,as I said on the GM $70 thread,it's gonna get worse,Toyota is oing to an extended shutdown, almost a month.

Toyota workers can either:

Work in the plant,training/cleanup
Take/use up vacation time
Or stay at home, and get nothing

The rest of us have holiday pay(2 weeks)after that,SOL,unemployment for a week. What I'm worried about is next year,as conditions are not gonna improve!

Toyota is already down to 7hr shifts, and still, the cars are piling up in the storage/shipping lots. Next year will begin 4 day workweeks.

You're right, many people here don't understand that even the Japanese auto makers have had HUGE drops in the demand for their product. 30 to 40% drops in sales figures are not going to make for pretty figures first and second quarters if it keeps up.

The CEO of Merrill Lynch wants a $10 Million bonus for laying off several thousand workers, saying he saved the company a lot of money.
How many people have and will be laid off this year and next is going to be considerably more than the gov't will publicize.

What are some organizations that help people who have been laid off?

Those of us who keep our jobs should give all we can to help. Maybe we can help each other here on the site by obtaining verification of the situation and donating what we can to help others eat. This will ensure the preservation of our own.

Nobody wants to donate money to private organizations to help those who have been laid off only to have the "regulars" simply get more.
