It really pisses me that Stellantis won't give the US the Ram 1200,
And the .gov won't let us buy one in Mexico and import it.
At the equivalent in pesos of $19,000 US, it looks pretty good to me

They're nice looking trucks.  Ran into a guy with one about a year ago.  He was still using Mexican plates as texas wouldnt let him register it.  Fortunately for him in texas it's not that unsuall.  But hes running risk per Alacritys posts.

I don't know if anyone has the graphic handy but supposedly they are releasing a ton of stuff over the next few years. I have no idea if that was one of them but there were a few new trucks on there. Think a new Dakota is confirmed and then at least one new Jeep truck. Been a while since I've seen it.

Actually I think the 1200 is based on a Peugeot Land Track? though made in China.
Looked like decent specs for a small pickup.

I doubt it would be worse than a Maverick, but for way less money.

If you take a look at the underpinnings and development origins of the Peugeot Landtrek, it's a Changan F70. PSA, prior to its merger with FCA - "co-developed" with Changan. But yea, it's China. We've talked about captive imports in a couple recent theads. This one for RAM in Mexico (MX).

Similarly to co-devs from Nissan (D27 Navara)  and Mitsu. Nissan Execs went to "Nissan identity, the Nissan DNA" (Humberstone, OZ). D'Etttore (Euro truck head) said "the new Navara was developed from Nissan's 80 years of experience designing robust and practical pickups". Ok then. Technically correct and semantically defensible, but we know what they are doing here. That's what happens when you get stuck with badge engineering. Can only imagine how the job of convincing buyers sucked for the Suzuki Equator (Frontier)  or Mitsu Raider (Dakota) marketing and model mgrs. Nissan went from building pickups for Mercedes Benz, Renault, Suzuki to this. But they will build for Mitsu in the States and maybe Honda. Those marketing jobs will suck as well.

Still global Navara is a fucking MV Triton, Nissan, and it has a fucking Mitsu 4N16 engine and it built at Mistu Laem Chabang. So mfgs do this. Mazda has with the 6e sedan and CX-6e SUV. Which is going to bite them in the ass in markets where the Changan/Deepal are showing up.

So the Landtrek and now the Fiat Titano since merger are Changan F70. It's uncomfortable for them, and negatively impactful for some buyers,  so it's buried. But it is built in China at Hebai Changan or Shenzen Baoneng (Which used to be a Changan PSA - CAPSA tho PSA sold out  around the beginnings of COViD). Shenzen builds the 1200 for Mexico and most all of the Landtrek - prolly all - with Changan powertrains. Initially with what amounted to a copy of Mitsu 4G69. Mitsu designs were common in China due to SAME (Shenyang Aero Mitsu Engine) success leading to ubiquity. Kinda like how early Japanese inline 6 were US mfg copies since they dominated Japan. Mitsu sold out last year and left China after over half a century. But China brands are developing thier own powertrain components. With the 1200 in MX current it's a Changan internal dev'd Blue Core/Whale 2.0L turbo - JL486 I think but I'm stretching here.

Fiat does local production with their own engine in two regions. South and Central America which gets a mid-range treatment and the 2.2L Multijet or maybe something else now it's prod in Argentina as well.  Then cheapest-seats Africa - which I believe is CKD  (complete knock down kit) with the Kunming Yunnai  1.9L (it's not a PSA 1.9 as many claim) that's assembled on soil in Tunisia.

So yea it's Chinese. The MX RAM 700 is the Fiat Strada - I mentioned both above when I said wait for Kuniskis' RAM Party USA that's underway. I noted, like Ann Margaret, neither the 1200 or 700 will be coming. The South American Rampage will, since it's on a platform common to Stellantis in the States (Compass/Hornet),- and those guys already said it would . It's close to the Fiat Toro. Strada/700 and Rampage/Toro are unibody pickups like Maverick or the upcoming Toyota GA-C and GA-K based utility bed models. Rampage will be built in North America.

There's things I'd theoretically consider "smuggling" in. Thats what we're talking about here when it's driven over under pretense. Getting close to COC here but this isn't encouragement, it's a legal threshold discussion. Changan Trucks aren't worth the risk of criminal prosecution. Even if it's unlikely and the loss of $25k (basest RAM 1200) is negligible. Forget a Mexican house (its own issue), the fraud at the border and your risk to liberty -  and wait for a Dakota (which is also 87% more likely than REO). Which will be $10k more, and 87% better. It won't be a Changan F70  - it will be . . . We'll need to wait on that.

That was the reason for my chuckle emoji brother. It hit me funny the length proposed to get very, very little. A China truck without warranty. It wasn't to mock, and I apologize as in hindsight I could see how that flippant emoji could be construed. If anyone wants to see how drive-overs are prosecuted by the FEDs, there's plenty of examples to research tho most aren't highly publicized and handled as a matter of course. But even when it's legally (tho indications of awful grey) imported you see imperial entanglements I'd prefer to avoid. Will Hedrick stepped in pro bono and unfucked 3 or 4 dozen imported Land Rover owners whose trucks were brought in less than standard manners. He won, but they were technically legal. What you've proposed, you ain't getting pro bono rep bother. If anyone does this, don't forget to save a bit for the war chest if/when you get skinned.

Srsly - Don't even fucking consider it.

I get the attraction. Peeps think cheap and how bad can it be. Plus it's made for "tough markets". Generally, that just means they are shit l

But GM does this with the importing of China SAIC Maxus T70 as the S10 and some other commercial vehicles in MX. The trucks aren't entirely shit anymore, but a better  buy is a Nissan (always sells well, Nissan kills it in MX) or Toyota Hikux - better a Tacoma - in Mexico. You'll just pay more than many other markets.

Explained 1200 origins above. I think most peeps would avoid China for a host of reasons. So Kuniskis will be very careful with RAM - both for buyers, 'Merica! And now tariffs. He has been so far.

Much coming. We have a couple members here who are involved but obviously been circumspect. The 1200 and 700 won't be in the mix. What is will be seen soon.

I don't want to sound overly skeptical, but I actually find it quite odd that a company who wants to build a super-simply bare bones vehicle, using off-the-shelf components, etc. - is bragging about bringing in a designer who has worked for Ferrari, BMW, etc.

I would have been more impressed if they'd brought in someone who had worked at IKEA or Lego.

I think we get conceptual sketches in November.  PRS or TA - dunno but I doubt it. Still bit more run than I thought those legs would carry that first week.

This is Brigid O'Kane early sketch for Bearclaw concept her and Roger's were working on at GM Advanced Concept Center out in Cali. Cool huh? It was supposed o be a Pontiac revival of the Typhoon on the S-platform. It ended up on  U-platform. Minivan.

As the Aztec. Eww.

It's  what should come next. We'll see how far his development group has taken him this early. But I can see Stephenson taking the commission.

If you add "developed and engineering in house" I'm a buyer. Prolly also if you add "sourced from a non-major mfg"

If you think petrol truck I4 are incapable, well there's a small pool of engines from various mfgs  that's have done exactly that without serous internal repairs.

Attached File

There's a number of Chinese mfgs who make copies of Toyota's Y engines. Late 4Y EFI would be the hot ticket. Late single row 22R has a rough time going that distance due to timing system soft points. Better oil now has extended, but I wouldn't expect high percentage achievement. Even with dual row refit. I'm basing that off 20R and early 22R experience and some refits. So maybe so. I've no testing to prove out. But the Y solves this.

Attached File

OHV with short double row timing chain.

1TR and 2TR doe very well to high miles  as does QR and some late KA. But resident Nissan expert is noisy about 150k timing chain intervals de rigueur.   So I'm not confident as I am with others.

The great thing about bootstrap start ups - legal get little interaction with ops, and there usually no on board general counsel. Claims like these take years to determine. By then you've failed or have sufficient cash and resources to manage coming up short. Zach has made a good faith (let's assume) statement, not warranted.

People that seem like whackadoodles (no nearly as grounded as these guys seem to be) gave us airplanes and firearms and shit.  Making a one off awesome bespoke whosamiwhatchit is easy compared to designing something as complex as a truck that can be mass produced.  But still totally doable in this day and age.

In my opinion though politics will be their biggest hurdle, a few years ago it'd be guarenf'nteed industry lobbyists would be crafting and pushing legislation/regulations to freeze them out.  The car industry in general is destroying itself with it's own bs though; they just may not have the juice to do anything.   Good chance an economic crisis (very likely) would mean loosening of restrictions as well.

Skeptical but optimistic.
