I know on a 1983 volkswagen rabbit gti you don't remove the negative battery lead to see if your alternator is working. That is unless you want to replace the diode or whatever hanging off the back of the alternator...

On your compressor or fan motor, if it's 5y old or older, might save future hassle by replacing now. They're like $10 if you find a local shop. Only $120 for shop to replace.
