TAIPEI: Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday (Jan 2) that the island will not accept a "one country, two systems" political arrangement with China, while stressing that all cross-strait negotiations need to be on a government-to-government basis.

"The vast majority in Taiwan resolutely oppose 'one country, two systems'. This is the 'Taiwan consensus'," she told reporters during a news conference at the Presidential Palace in Taipei.

"We call on China to bravely step forward for democracy, for only by doing so can it truly understand the people of Taiwan's thinking and insistence."

Tsai's comments came after Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a speech on Wednesday that nobody can change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, and that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should seek "reunification".

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday (Jan 2) that nobody can change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, and that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should seek "reunification".

All people in Taiwan must "clearly recognise that Taiwan independence would only bring profound disaster to Taiwan", Xi said.

“We make no promise to abandon the use of force, and retain the option of taking all necessary measures,” Mr. Xi said in a section of the speech that drew rousing applause. Those options, he said, could be used against “intervention by external forces.”

Mr. Xi’s speech commemorated the 40 years since China laid out a new approach to Taiwan soon after the United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing at the start of 1979. But the United States has remained Taiwan’s most important partner, and the Trump administration has bolstered some support, to the consternation of Chinese officials.

In March, President Trump signed the Taiwan Travel Act, which encourages official government exchanges between the United States and Taiwan. And in June, the United States dedicated a new $250 million unofficial embassy in Taipei.

On the last day of 2018, Mr. Trump signed into law the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act, which tries to counter China’s growing military influence. The section of the law on Taiwan reiterates American commitment “to counter efforts to change the status quo and to support peaceful resolution acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait.” It also calls on the American president to send high-level officials to Taiwan and to regularly sell arms to the island.

A defiant Tsai on Wednesday warned Beijing that Taiwan's people will never give up the kind of freedoms unseen on the authoritarian mainland.

Beijing "must respect the insistence of 23 million people for freedom and democracy" and "must use peaceful and equal terms to handle our differences", she said.

Good. As long as Taiwan is willing to stand up for itself, I think we should have Taiwan's back.

Modern western society isn't a robust thing. It's incredibly delicate. The stability of western-style civilization relies on values and practices that are highly counterintuitive to human nature. If the sort of society that we've built over the past few centuries is going to survive, then such societies need to look out for one another. It's nowhere written in stone that this thing is guaranteed to continue.

Hon Hai/Foxconn Technology Group, they make Apple's Iphones, it is based in Taiwan, but most of its factories are in China. There are many companies like this in Taiwan/China, just that Hon Hai/Foxconn Technology Group is the biggest.

From Wikipedia:
United States[edit]
Main article: Foxconn's Wisconsin plant

Foxconn and President Donald Trump announced at the White House on July 26, 2017, that Foxconn will build a US$10 billion flat screen TV manufacturing plant in southeastern Wisconsin.[61][62] The Foxconn deal, promising 13,000 high paying jobs, is the largest corporate attraction deal in U.S. history, in terms of pure number of jobs.[63] Foxconn is expected to contribute $51.5 billion to Wisconsin's GDP over the next 15 years, which is $3.4 billion annually.[64] However, the deal is being criticized for the $3 billion in tax-payer funded incentives given to Foxconn,[65] though every $1 in state incentives is estimated to generate a return of $18 in additional state GDP.[66]

Foxconn will also be exempt from an environmental impact statement,[67] water quality certification and permits for some activities on or near waterways, but must comply with air, solid waste and hazardous waste standards.[68] Given water concerns, Foxconn is spending $30 million on zero liquid discharge technology, nearly eliminating any industrial waste water discharge.[63] Foxconn is also required to replace wetlands at a higher ratio than other companies; Foxconn must restore 2 acres of wetland for every 1 acre disturbed instead of the ratio of 1.2 to 1 for other companies.[63]

As of October 4, 2017, Foxconn agreed to locate their plant at Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin,[69] and broke ground for the plant June 28, 2018. President Trump was in attendance to promote American manufacturing.

He'd be on here bitching about how Trump is abandoning our allies if the situation was inverse and China actually invaded undeterred.

I started to write out a quick synopsis of the geopolitical implications of Taiwan coupled with the strategic importance of maintaining the balance of power in the "East China Sea" but frankly he's either incredibly young, naive, or he's trolling. . . . most likely a mix of all three.

Not worth the effort.

It's about 1/25th the size of China's, but the tech transfer would be the real value.  Lots of stuff that China is incapable of doing itself, and plenty of trade-secret information that U.S. companies have shared with Taiwanese manufacturers.

Taiwan is Reverse-Engineering Fighter Jet Engines To Power a Cruise Missile
By Kyle Mizokami
Jan 4, 2019

Taiwan thinks it needs new long-range weapons to keep China at bay, and now it has an innovative (if weird) solution. The nation is reportedly pulling engines out of old fighter jets to figure out how to make one for a cruise missile.

Over the years, Taiwan bought or produced 308 Tiger IIs, including 242 single seat -E versions and 66 two seat -F versions. Now a report in the Taiwanese press states that Taiwan’s Chinese Academy of Sciences, in conjunction with the Republic of China Air Force, is pulling engines from decommissioned Tiger IIs with the hopes of producing a “simplified, improved” turbojet engine expected to go into a new missile to threaten China.

Why is Taiwan going to all this reverse-engineering trouble? The island split from China in 1949, the result of a bloody civil war, and the old Republic of China government fled to the island after communist forces won victory on the mainland. Over the decades, Beijing has repeatedly threatened to invade and complete its victory, a idea that becomes more plausible with each passing year as China’s military strength grows.

One way for Taiwan to prevent invasion is to hold targets on the mainland at risk. The Formosa Strait separating the two countries is only 110 miles long, so a cruise missile with a 300-mile range could strike targets more than 150 miles inside mainland China, threatening airfields, ports, command centers, and anything else that would support an invasion. A pre-emptive strike against such targets could disrupt, delay, or even cancel a cross-strait attack before it begins.

And, in all likelihood, even if we did not overtly intervene, we would covertly help Taiwan. It would be pretty easy to send a bunch of attack subs to the Formosa Strait to torpedo everything that hits the water. Pretty hard to prove which countries subs are torpedoing your ships. "Them damn Taiwanese must have been secretly building submarines." That's exactly what China would do to us if the roles were reversed.

Really?  What Taiwan has, the PLA will have it shortly.

Xi said what he said to the Chinese, it has nothing to do with anybody outside China.

Chai ssid what she said to the Taiwanese, same deal.

They are making their pastures for their own people to see.

China is not going to war with Taiwan, because it doesn't have to.   It's choking Taiwan's economy and isolating it diplomatically.  It's an island only 110 miles from mainland China.
