Taser Sues Gannett for Libel Over Story

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Stun gun maker Taser International Inc. on Friday said it filed a libel lawsuit against USA Today publisher Gannett Co. for publishing an article that Taser said misled readers about the safety of its products.

Taser, which has been under scrutiny over the safety of its stun guns, said it filed suit in Arizona Superior Court accusing Gannett of libel, false light invasion of privacy, injurious falsehood and tortious interference with business relations.

Tara Connell, a spokeswoman for Gannett, said the McLean, Va.-based company had not yet seen the complaint and did not have a comment on it.

Taser shares rose 14 cents to $10.18 in early trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock is down about 68 percent so far this year.

The lawsuit centers on a USA Today article from June 3, which Taser said vastly overstated the level of electrical output of one of Taser's stun guns. Moreover, the newspaper ''further sensationalized'' the story with photographic comparisons of the power of the Taser gun with the electrical output of an electric chair, a lightning storm and an electric train track, Taser said.

The article reported the electrical output of the gun was more than 100 times that of the electric chair, when in fact the average electrical current of Taser guns is 1,000 times less than that of an electric chair, the company said.

About fucking time.

But hey, they're journalists! They have their precious freedom of the press, which they thinks entitles them not only to report the news, but MAKE IT UP, too!

Isn't it a question of amps not volts that makes the electric chair lethal? I thought, like, 1000 volts wouldn't kill you but 1000 amps would knock the bottom of your feet off.

Amps versus volts.

Yes, but the talking heads aren't smart enough to know that yet are the ones who act like they are experts at everything

yea, i did some informal looking around. amps are what pushes volts thru an electric cable. i saw some guy getting tased on Cops the other night, he was laying down and his whole body was fluttering like a sheet in the wind.

Actually 1000 amps would turn you into a dust mote...

Volts mean very little in terms of electrical current. You can have a high voltage with low amperage, or vice versa, which is why you see transformers stepping the current for use in homes from the current used on transmission lines. Amps are the driving force for doing work.

FYI....the normal leathal current is somewhere in the neighborhood of .1 - .2A and in some cases less.
