Friend of mine is having an issue with Her HP desktop.
At start-up she gets an error message along the lines of
" System fan inoperable. Please correct this issue to prevent system damage Press F2 to continue"

Pressing F2 had no effect. The system hangs at that point.
I opened up her case and all the fans appear to be functioning correctly and they system was not chalk full of dustbunnies.
To my line of reasoning the only fan that should prompt that message is the CPU fan. I've removed her CPU fan and heat-sink and will be making a trip to CompUSA this afternoon to purchase a new fan.

My plan is to install a new fan on the heat-sink then reapply thermal paste, install the assembly then try to boot. IF the system will boot I'm going to DL and run SpeedFan to see if all the other fans are working correctly and monitor the temps for a bit.

If the system boots, anything else I should be aware of?
If it doesn't boot what else should I look at?

FWIW, Her system is not OC'ed ( she doesn't even have a Video Card installed!) and is used primarily for Surfing, email, and spreadsheet type stuffs.

TIA,
echo

The only one that matters in SOHO desktops is the CPU fan. Might just be that simple.

ETA: If she plans on keeping that computer for another 2 years or so, replace all the fans.

system monitor probably has a minimum fan rpm and if the fan spins below that threshold, alert is raised.

edit: derp.. can't read.

I installed a new fan and heatsink and it is working fine now.
