I needed to reference an old subscription and the link didn't work.

I checked a couple more and they were dead.

Do these have and expiration date or something?

Not really, but the threads are moved to the archives after a few months of inactivity and probably where they are now.

So what's the point of subscriptions if the links don't work?

Subscriptions are email notifications when a new message is added. If the thread dies off, is locked, or otherwise has lost interest, it's a pretty dead issue all around.
