This is driving me insane. I have a client with a problem unlike I've ever seen before.

Organization has domain, win2k11 SBS all only through the wired network. Wireless network is up with nothing but internet access for people's phones/ipads.

Problem is arising with one laptop, and varies based on which network it is connected to. With wired network (domain) everything works great... if I bring the laptop to my location and use it (my business has VPN to that business), it works fine.

When there is no access to the wired network (or VPN), ONE particular program flakes out. This is a program that does not access the network or internet (it doesn't even check for updates), is installed from DVD/ISO file. When off the business network, program randomly hangs for 20-25 seconds when attempting to do things.

Developer verified that nothing in the program should be accessing network/internet.

This is a new Dell Latitude, i7, 4GB RAM. Processor and memory do not fluctuate when the program hangs (around 5% processor usage).

I have tried monitoring network connections as the program is running via netstat, and do not see any additional connections when the program is running. I have reinstalled from ISO, reinstalled from DVD, run the program as admin, in various states of compatibility mode, etc. Nothing makes any difference.

I cannot replicate this issue with any VM or test workstation running the same OS here at my business, but I'm not connecting to their domain when I test this way. When I test, everything works fine.

So I'm stumped. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try?

does the program run correctly if you login as the local user and not on the domain?

Reverse DNS lookup timeout? Maybe it uses an internal server of some variety that's calling gethostbyaddr

i was thinking dns too.  but normally the delay is longer?

I did log on as local administrator account, same results.

I'm just not sure what it could possibly be looking up for it to be DNS. The program is basically a giant database pulling internal information... Obviously it ::shouldn't:: be connecting out for anything, but that must not be the case. It's strange that in other environments without any network connection (no DNS), the problem isn't happening.

I guess I need to track down something better than netstat in order to see what is actually going on.

What DBMS does it use?

The files look to be proprietary... file extension is somewhat similar to program name, and googling doesn't pull up any info on that file type.

I know that no database installation is required, so that at least narrows it down somewhat.

Obvious?  Yes.  First thing this morning, I found something obvious that fixed a problem that I worked on for four hours yesterday.    I'm feeling a little stupid right now.

There are no unusual errors or warnings in the event log, unfortunately.

Os is win7 enterprise x64. I have successfully installed and used it on a VM (not on laptop) with same OS and cannot replicate problem. I have installed it on my test bench (win7 ultimate x64) without problem.

Only tried compatibility mode, not a full VM on the laptop. That is one thing I will try... but I would rather give it to the user without having to have them go through any hoops.

After sleeping on it, one of my next steps is to yank the hard drive and put in another one w/ a clean install of the OS that is NOT connected joined to the domain to see if the program functions properly. If that works, join to domain and see if problem pops back up or not.

I hate fixing computers sometimes.

An update:

Install new hard drive, OS and all updates and patches. Install problematic program with no problems.

So I figure it has something to do with the servers, and decide to join the laptop (w/ new HD) to the domain... no problems.

Install all other programs trying to find something that "breaks" the culprit program to no avail.

Yank the new HD out and put the old one back in to try to look for anything I may have missed... suddenly, the original OS/HD is not displaying the problem. I spent 2 hours today messing with it trying to replicate the problem, and it is gone.

Other than pulling the hard drive and putting it back in, there shouldn't have been any changes to the original drive. I am still stumped, and hope that this really is fixed, and isn't going to pop back up at a later point.
