I've got a bang up idea (at least to me), and I want to start a ecommerce website to support it. The problem I'm running into is that I have no fucking clue how to create a website.

Any info from the hive about starting a website for an fool like me

You have two options really.
1) You can attempt to learn how to do it yourself. If you choose this method then there may or may not be a steep learning curve depending on your background.
If you think it's something you can learn in time then go for it. As for the ecommerce part, I'd go with one of the pre-packaged deals from godaddy or the like. They are relatively easy to set up and don't require much to get them running.
2) You can pay someone else to do it for you. If you are just starting up then this might not be the best plan as it can get costly. On the other hand you may be able to get a reasonably decent looking site from a student at a local college or from one of the many people in India who offer the service.

Ok, but I'm clueless about the process.

Do you buy the URL for a certain amount of time?
Do you pay for the hosting as you go?
Am I over thinking this, or is it really complex?

This. You can count on a simple 3 page eCommerce site that works, to run you a couple $k on the low end from a reputable firm.

You can get a graphic design student to do it cheaper and it may or may not work right

The costly/time consuming part isn't getting the site up and running, it's marketing it

Read up on SEO yourself and buy some adwords ads.

Good luck.

Pretty much this. There's also premade "shopping cart" websites like http://www.volusion.com/. My brother works for them.

The domain name/ URL is bought in 1 year increments through a place like godaddy or 1and1.
The hosting is bought in month/6 month/year packages from hosting places like hostgator

It's not too bad, many of the hosting sites have free website builders you can use to get it setup

This is VERY important and overlooked by way too many people who just want a website. Getting people to your site is important...and difficult. There are a lot of websites out there and you have all of two seconds to direct them to your site and get them hooked before they move on to something better. Adwords does actually get traffic to your site...whether or not you get a return on that investment can really depend on what you are selling though.

Ya, adwords rocks

I do my own SEO. I'm not paying some retard to manage an adwords account for me and set up listings on free sites for the backlinks.

I had my developer put the meta tags in the pages and anybody who's even slightly computer literate can do their own legit SEO.

Check out BlueHost.  They are a web hosting company, and offer free scripts to install some software that may fit your needs.

When you register a domain, it is for at least one year, possibly more.  The cost to me is around $10 a domain per year (I use Blue Host).

Hosting plans vary, Blue Host you pay up front.

There are plenty of sites out there that offer pre-built stores.  Yahoo is one of them.  All you have to do is plug in the items you want to sell.

Try www.volusion.com

I'm not going to lie.  This isn't going to be easy if you know nothing about the internet and e-commerce but at least they'll have most of it pre-packaged and ready to go for you.
