Its been a while but we used a sprayer then a roller or brush to smooth out the color. That worked well for us.

Try a foam pad, like those used for hardwood floor finishing.
They screw onto a roller pole, produce the best finish for time spent.

Any pro who knows his ass from his elbow and gives a shit about the result and his reputation uses a dedicated stain brush and the wet on wet method.
