I figured that I would get the fastest answer to this question in GD so here it goes.  Springfield lists a high capacity 1911 GI in their 2009 catalog and in one of the recent gun magazines they are listing a high capacity Trophy Match for 2010.  Now my question is are these actually available or are they only custom shop guns? The reason that I ask is that at the gun shop yesterday the "manager" said that these have never been made and they have just been in the catalog for the last 10 years.  I hoping that this is just another case of "Stories from the local Gun Shop," because I would like to get one of these.

I have a high cap springfield 1911.  It holds 14 rounds of 45, and the para p-14 mags work in it.  The only thing is, it was just like a GI, no beavertail, GI sights and regular ejection port.  So I put an Ed Brown beaver tail on it, gave it a trigger job, and put a springfield loaded slide on it.  This gun kicks some serious ass.  And I got it probably 7-8 years ago.

He's full of shit. I bought one 5 or 6 years ago and sold it because it wasn't my thing. Went back to a single stack.

ETA: Hell, I still have a photo of it on my Photobucket account.

I'm sure they were more popular back when Para Ordnance was getting a lot of buzz, but like most guys who carry a 1911, getting a double stack would mean I'd have to acquire a ton of whole different magazines and carry gear, e.g. holsters. I went the Para route one time and although I have no interest in doing that again, I admit I wouldn't mind getting one of those Springers. I know this much though, after watching Para mags go from $35.00 or so to $125.00, I'd definitely stock up on those mags now before the next ban arrives.

Firstly...why a fucking 1911?  Are you that desperate to shit your money away?  The system itself is ANTIQUATED and requires SHIT-TONS of constant maintenance and upkeep.
Secondly...in order to make the thing function at least in a HALF-ASS fashion, you need to drop about $2K worth of parts and work into the gun.
Thirdly...a SPRINGFIELD?!  Are you joking?

Seriously, dude.  You'd be better off stacking a pile of 100 dollar bills up in a pile, adding gasoline, catching the shit on fire...and creating paintings with the ash residue.  You certainly wouldn't be as irritated and upset with your 2lb paperweight.

I picked one up a few years ago at a local pawn shop for 225.00.

It now resides in the drawer beside the bed.
With an extended 20 rd magazine.

My brother nicknamed it "Porta Cannon".
Has a nice ring to it.
I think I'll keep it.

Chris

BTW,I have 15-18K rounds through it...

They don't appear to make a hell of a lot of them, but every once in a while I'll see a new GI hicap in the case at my local shop.   They are basically a Para Ordnance clone, but somehow they managed to make the frame feel even blockier than the Paras.

I don't really understand why they haven't offered a more match-ready doublestack since Leatham shoots the piss out of them.   You'd think they'd try to capitalize on that.

Just throwing this out there: do you own a gun store, and stock the full range of Taurus Judges?

If I remember correctly, the Springfield does have a forged frame.

The Para frames are castings.

Depending on how they feel in the hand (and different grip options), that it might be a nifty 1911 to have––though holsters and mag carriers would become an issue.

Strange......I got my 1911 for $800 even, and of the tons of rounds I've put through it, it choked once......because it was a crappy mag and off-brand hollow-points that I hadn't sat well in the mag.  Function-wise, I have dropped exactly $0 into it; finish wise, about $250, but that's just me .  And it's a KIMBER to boot.

You, sir, are wrong, at least for MY 1911.

Many holsters will fit just fine, since the slide is a 1911 slide.    Mag carriers are out there, there are plenty for the competition market and I have used a Uncle Mike's dual mag pouch with good results when I can't use my Safariland 773s.  'Course that's for STI/SVI mags, but the mag bodies are nearly identical in size.
