It's just not my thing YET. I'm working on it. Woodworking is my profession but turning is only one aspect. I much prefer bowls/plates/vases/etc. That's what I'm proficient at. But my job is calling on me to dive into spindle work. One of two I need to do. Now the pressure is on for an OCD person like myself.

An old friend, 'Swick' (RIP) had a side business turning spindles for restorations in old houses and stuff. He build an easel behind the lathe for drawings and/or holding a sample spindle to copy. Above his lathe he hung 6 or 10 outside calipers that he would set for the various diameters on the spindle. He was an accomplished wood turner and could knock off a finished spindle in less than half of the time it takes to set up a duplicator. One key reason is that most duplicators scrape the wood and don't cut the wood. Swick really knew how to cut with a lathe. He also had pair of bench grinders right next to his main lathe so he could touch up his gouges, skews, & chisels while turning. |
