It's a boring question, but, isn't there software to allow you to alter a document after you  scan  it. For example: I do not want to re-type the same document I need to alter to  use again at work but I only have a hard copy. Help!

You probably want to look at Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.  Most off the shelf scanners package some sort of OCR software.  I've had good luck with Caere OmniPage Pro.

They may have gotten better since the last time I used one, but make sure you proofread the scan carefully.  They can have trouble with some fonts and scripts.

We use OmniPagePro version 9.0 here at work and it works very well.
