My son goes to catholic school and one of the uniform items is a softshell jacket. My wife's employer finally cut us a break on health insurance, so I decided to buy him one. It looks pretty sharp. I think I need one too! I see a lot of folks wearing these. Does anyone have any recommendations on a brand?

I have hoodies, but they aren't water repellent and they sag when you stick a gun in the pocket. The "softshells" seem to have a bit more structure. My heavier coats are, well, just heavy and are usually left in the truck.

Why would you buy your employer a soft shell jacket?

Antecedent lives matter!

I have a couple, little nicer than a fleese. Not as waterproof as a hard shell .

I buy Columbia ones. A little pricey but they fit well and have tall sizes which I need. There's an outlet near me that puts them at deep discount in the spring.

just go to Costco and get a $20 one.  lots of colors and sizes.  won't hurt so much if he loses it or messes it up

+1 Unless you're going to be spending two weeks living in it out in the wilderness, you won't appreciate the difference between the Costco version and more expensive ones. Especially as a kid.

Got a Minnesota Gophers branded Columbia as a gift a couple years ago.  It's my favorite jacket before full-coat season.

Walmart sells something that's halfway between a soft shell and hard shell for about $25.

I bought one before I went to cola warrior as a disposable jacket in case it got screwed up, but it's actually really nice. I've been wearing it since then.

Love this one. Lots of compliments, even women asking if it comes in girlie colors or where to find a women's version.
TAD Stealth LT
Stays dry & ventilated, worn daily in the foot hills of the Pacific North West.

Third vote on the Costco ones, although this assumes you have access to them. I own one of their $20 ones and there is very, very little discernible difference between it and my ~$90 North Face one.

Does anyone read OPs anymore. He bought his kid one (through the kids school) and liked it so now he wants to buy HIMSELF one.

North Face is probably hated here because it's such a popular brand and most people just buy it as a status symbol. But I've had one of their basic soft shell jackets for almost 5 years and I wear it all the time in the spring and summer. It's been extremely durable with the only wear being some UV discoloration on the collar (the part that feels like suede.) I bought an insulated soft shell from them last winter and it's very warm and lightweight.

I have this one from Cabelas.  Very nice coat; breathes when it's warm and keeps me warm when it's cold.

I still have and wear the one I got from Costco a few years ago.  It's finally wearing out so I bought a new one from Sam's club a couple of weeks ago for $25.  I have been pleased with both.

I have a couple different, older Mountain Hardware jackets.  a shell, and what is very similar to their current "Ghost" model, which is what I wear all the time.
when it gets a bit cooler, a MH fleece with the "Ghost" is all that is needed.   When it gets colder, the shell comes out and then add the fleece as a liner.

I have the Condor one have wore it all last winter and just broke it out again.  I had one minor issue with some stitching, which was easily repaired.  I also have one I picked up from Sam's for about $20 that works just as good, it just doesn't have a hood option.

Any brand but Columbia. Their CEO, little Timmy Johnson, is a Hitlery supporter. He also campaigned to close the public beach in Gearhart, Oregon contending his beach-front property (vacation home) was being negatively impacted by the riff-raff enjoying the beach.

Another vote on the Costco/Kirkland one for $19.99.  Wife and I have had softshells from Condor, North Face, Columbia and a few others and for the price it can't be beat.

+1 on the Mountain Hardwear. They are like the Ruger of outerwear. Simple, understated yet rugged as hell.

If you are too cheap for Arcteryx, go to REI and ask them for one.

I have three of the Costco Kirkland soft shells. They work great and are cheap. I wore the last one all fall and winter (never even got out the larger winter coat) and it's still in great condition.
I only bought the new one this year because I liked the color.

The Adidas Terrex Swift Softshell hoodie is the best price/quality ratio softshell on the market, period.

It even comes in tactical colors so you can play commando in your backyard.
