So You Want To Buy A Surplus HMMWV/Humvee - A How-To Guide (And All Other Things HMMWV Too!) (Page 102 of 102)

Just dipped my toe in the water too.... I got the idea I wanted something simpler all mechanical... not "Computer" controlled. I decided I wanted an HMMWV, specifically a "Helmet Hardtop" like what we had in the military. Sooo I found one on Facebook Marketplace in Missouri...  I contacted the seller and asked a couple questions he dropped the price $2500 in the first week. I told him I was very interested but would have to be after the first of the year. The price was doable for me at this point. Just timing all wrong. Flash forward a bit and I told him I had the funds ready Terms CASH. We agreed on a day to meet, he was driving from 6 hours from the truck I would be 2.5 hours from it. He offered and I accepted to deliver, I asked how much extra that was and he was not interested just wanted to make it easier for me. I offered Ammo Barter, 1500 rounds of M855... he sent me a pic day prior that he had it loaded, and we agreed on a good spot to meet that was not sucky for a trailer... I took it for a test drive once we got it unloaded. Was cold that day... added a few things and made it "Mine" Went through a registrar to get title and plates just easier that way. costs a bit extra but worth not having a hassle.. the place I chose was HMMWVREGISTRATION.COM I did not realize it until after but the helmet top shown on their main page is MY TRUCK! One of the photos that came from the GOVplanet auction M1097R1 2006 Rework, 6.5L Detroit Diesel 3 Speed TH400 transmission (if you knew my transmission woes recently you would understand why this is a good thing!) Seats are the old school "Jeep" seats but I will switch to high backs in the front and custom leans and cushions in the back. add a C-Pillar and a Partition and some AC... I've driven it for a while now had a couple hurdles to jump but she is a good truck. Destined to be 383 CARC Camo Green Raptor Liner on the outside and keep the floor inside CARC Tan with Raptor liner Dash and windshield frame green, B-Pillar Green, C-Pillar Green... I've installed a radio tray and a General Aviation portable interphone. and some inexpensive Rugged Radios headsets. 4 place. Brushguard and new bumper Rear view cam. Android tablet to run ATAK or CAL TOPO or just google maps. So far I am loving it. |

You'll end up either loving it or hating it - it doesn't seem like there is much in-between, lol. Nice score on the x-doors and the helmet hardtop is one of the better tops to keep the outside, out. It looks a little chilly there to be getting ready to paint anything, but a pressure washer will clean that truck up good and make it look nice. |

I've got mine on the road after doing a lot of work repairing the roof, making B and C pillars, and making my aftermarket universal hatch. Now I'm out campaigning with the Humvee for my run for the VA House of Delegates. As is tradition for me, there's a smashed H2 toy in the pintle.

Attached File Attached File Slowly adding more parts. Yeah, it’s a little bit but slow and steady wins the race. Keep going back and forth between an 1152 and a 65. I hate 52s. They are miserable to drive and I feel claustrophobic but only having to buy 2 doors and half the armor package is nice |

My FIL bought one of the first 100 civilian Humvees that rolled off the line. It has a plaque stating that fact. He passed away a couple years back and the family keeps it parked in the driveway, in working condition. I'd buy it off of them if ever they decide to sell it, but it has too much sentimental value. |

Making progress, have the passenger side mostly done, need to paint fasteners, adjust the shims on the doors install intake and mirror. The plan is to knock out the driver next weekend along with the rear wall. Hopefully install the OGPK with Neptune wall and BPMTU |

So - question - have any of y'all had both the HMMWV and an H1? Sort of leaning towards the H1....something about all of the "creature" comforts....the wife was fine with the non-AC HMMWV that I had, doors off, cruising, etc...but just short little trips....I'm all about loading it up and heading out! Found…. anyone have a good usable 2 man rear curtain they just have laying around. I'm not picky.. Green or tan is fine but my 1123 is green. Or the mounts/brackets for the airlift bumper??? I can get a bumper locally but he doesn't have the mounts.. |
