18.5".  Yup love it.  Plus you can remove the Middle and Top portions and put your cooking grate on the bottom section and use the WSM as a grill.  The grate is close to the charcoal so you can get the heat high if you want.

22.5" Weber Smokey Mountain, with an aftermarket Cajun Bandit S.S. ring
& extra grates I added. I had an 18.5", but I "gifted" it to some relatives
so I would have an excuse to buy the 22.5".

A good friend at work has a Grilla pellet smoker that he really likes.
Some of the beef jerky that came off of it tasted great.

The pellet smokers are nice if you prefer the turn-it-on-and-walk-away
for a few hours approach. WSM's are also that way, once you get a feel for
how to regulate the temp (which is not difficult if you control the temp on the
way up, rather than trying to cool them down).

I'd suggest a propane or electric.

Realize that when smoking, smoke is only utilized for part of the cooking... after that, it's merely an outdoor oven.

Google ugly drum smoker. Look at the big poppa kit. Just ordered mine and got my drum today.so no real experience with it but the reviews and discussion on the smoker forums are all great.

Weber Smokey Mountain. I have the 14.5 and the 22 and they both work great. As mentioned above, once you get a feel on temp control, it'll run for hours at optimal temp.

In that price range the WSM is the way to go , you can do a few mods if you want but they arent really neccessary .

I have a propane and I have smoked before.  I am not a pit master but not a novice either.

What's wrong with the one you have?  Worn out, or do you just want another one to mess with?

When I bought my smoker, I did some looking into the WSM because some of the initial reviews like you see here.

Once I started digging a little further, a lot of people were rather unimpressed by it, especially for the price that you pay.  Seems the biggest complaint was air leaks.

I ended up buying a propane Masterbuilt for less than half of what the WSM sold for.

My next one will probably be home built out of 304 stainless, propane fired and PID controlled.

I have a propane grill not a smoker.  I want to get into smoking more right now I have been smoking with the neighbor on his.  His has temp issues it is so hard to maintain a consistent temp and the wind here really drives it up quick.  Really I want a smoker because I like cooking and smoking is one thing I do not get to do as much as I want and want to perfect it.

Ahh, OK.

Here's a charcoal smoker:

Here's an electric:

Here's a dual fuel, it uses propane or charcoal.  This is similar to the one I use.

Do some research, I wouldn't recommend the Weber smoky mountain just because of the price.  As you can see there are a lot of good, less expensive options.  There are also a lot of good review sites out there, as well as plenty of mods for you to do.

One thing that pretty much everyone agrees on is that you shouldn't get an offset side smoker, getting the heat in the right place is a pain in the ass with them. Much easier when you have physics (e.g. heat rises) working with you.

+1

When we throw parties I have the smoker running along with a pair of grills - one propane and the other charcoal. The electric smoker takes care of itself.

I had a charcoal smoker and ended up giving it away ... hated it. We grill and barbeque year round and the charcoal smoker just needed too much attention and burned through too much charcoal.

Next weekend I'll have 15 pounds of St. Louis spare ribs in the smoker, 20 pounds of Santa Maria style tri-tip on a grill, and the last grill open for my wife's shrimp and squid and the burgers and dogs for the kids.

Do you plan on smoking for just you and your family, or bigger parties and stuff.

For me, it's always less than 6 people, so I built a smoker out of a 14.5" Weber Smokey Joe gold and a Tramontina tamale cooker (this was before they re-released the 14.5 Smokey Mountain).

It works fantastic for chicken and pork. Brisket I will smoke for 4-6 hours, then transfer to the oven until it comes up to temp.

I really want to try a Traeger, but don't want to drop the $700 on the one at Costco. Not sure if those $400 Jr Elites are good or not.

Ez bake oven (electric smoker) like a MES (masterbuit electric smoker)  Temps are exact,  maintains humidity well, can buy cold smoker attachment for 60, or use amazeN pellet smoker to add smoke and cold smoke do you can do cheese/etc.  The MES 40 holds a shitton of meat for its size.  I switched over from a 8ft offset smoker I built and used for 20yrs and havent looked back.  I could turn out slightly better product with the offset but the effort was monumentaly higher.

How much time and effort are you willing to dedicate to smoking.

I think offsets give the absolute best flavor.  But they are a total PITA when doing a long smoke.

I use a primo which still gives good flavor with a LOT less effort.

I've got a Smokin' Tex 1400 I absolutely adore.  Kinda up at the top end of your budget though.  The only thing that I don't love is I have to cut rib racks to get them in there.  That's it.
