Which is your Favorite or Best Single Action Revolver and why?
4/8/2007 1:37:02 PM EDT

All the gun rags say the USFC SAA is better than the Colt.

I dont own a Colt, but I do own a USFC Rodeo and a Cimmeron 7th Cav Commerative.

I'd take the Freedom Arms 1st in .454 Casull, or take the incredilbly well-made USFA's.

I have a stainless Vaquero my wife gave me as a wedding present. 44 magnum

Vaquero...here's why.

When I was looking to get into SASS, I asked Hamilton Bowen (no one can argue about his revolver expertise).  He response was that the Ruger is a much better revolver.  He said the SAA was typically carried a lot and shot little.  The kind of use (abuse) that a SASS or serious hobbiest/gun-nut is often too much for a Colt SAA or it's clones.  The Rugers are made to take that kind of shooting and just keep on going (and do it well).  I bought the Vaqueros....but I sold 'em after quitting SASS (that's a whole other story).

So if you're getting one to shoot the living snot out of, get a Ruger hands down.  If you're looking for something to rarely shoot, but pass down for generations, get the Colt.

Well, it's not on the list but I REALLY dig my Ruger Super-Single-Six 50th anniversary edition and the purty cocobolo stocks that came on it

I had an USFA Cowboy and it was sweet.  Someone told me the front of the hammer is slightly tapered so it won't scratch against the frame when fired like the Colt.

if it a aint a colt its just a copy.

imo comparing a vaquero to a SAA is like comparing a broad sword to a scalpel.

I have a blued Abilene in .44 magnum.  It is very sensitive on ammunition, I fired some in it that keyholed at 25 meters.  Seems to be well made.

Colt, Ruger.

I voted Rugers since they are the staple of SASS. And most of the SASS shooters will kick any of the 83rd Chairborne Commando's(Internet Detachment) ass shooting since they actually shoot.

My personal setup right now is a brace of the 1970's release of Colt 1860 .44's.

I really like my Uberti Cattlemans 5 1/5" in .45 Colt.

Nothing wrong with the Vaquero but imo it just isn't as authentic looking as the Uberti.
My "Old Style" Uberti does not have a transfer bar, it has a unique integral saftey that retracts the firing pin into the hammer when it is down unless the trigger is pulled.
When the hammer is cocked the firing pin is projected and looks like it is part of the hammer.

I can attest to that I had a pair of SAA clones and my dad had rugers We were always replacing springs on my guns were  as my dads only had a trigger job.

You're all wrong, every last one of you.

The best single action on the market is the Freedom Arms model '97, in .45colt.

It's more compact than a Colt and stronger than an old school Blackhawk.

If you want bang for the buck though Rugers rule. You need a  belt mountain base pin and oversize latch to really get them right though.

I like the 3 screw .357s too, but none of the Ruger grips fit me right, the FA grip is perfect.

Like I said, the FA97 has no equal.

Thanks for the enlightening on the F/A 97 if I ever need to shoot bullets 300 Gr. and less (due to the cylinder length) and give up 30,000 PSI cylinder strength. I'll grab one.

Uberti builds the frames for Cimmaron Arms who then slap them together and stamp their name on it.

Same thing with Navy Arms.

So why did I leave out Uberti (Cimmaron)? Well for starters I am prevented from listing more than 5 choices in a poll on Arfcom.
Second: US Firearms makes a vastly superior Colt Clone..in fact Colt wishes they make a revolver as fine as US Firearms...they used to with the 1st Generation Colts but things have gone down hill..

Freedom Arms makes a great Single Action..but again..not enough room in the Poll.

The Schofield and Remington Outlaw represented something a bit different so I included them instead of Freedom Arms.

Ditto with regards to the Ruger Black Hawk.

44 magnum Vaquero.....

Colts and Roogers feel different......

For the best of the Colts, a 2nd generation SAA.

For being almost indestructible and being able to hunt with it....Ruger old model Vaquero SA.
I am not familiar enough with the Freedon Arms models.

The Schofield and Remmie 1875 have altogether different grip shapes.
Original S&Ws are a little too pricey for regular use....
Uberti makes a fine copy, but they don't do black powder too well.

My first .45 was an Arminius, made Sauer & Sohn in Germany. It is every bit as tough as a Ruger.

My personal brace is a pair of Pietta made Remmie New Model Armys, converted to cartridge (.45 Colt).

YMMV

Ruger 5 1/2" Blackhawk in .45LC.  With hot loads, a wickedly powerful handgun.

I must say that my USFA Rodeo is about as perfect inside and out as a single-action could be.  Original Colt spec with one exception so far as I can tell: the checkering on the hammer is a bit more precise on the USFA.
