I'm trying to burn a backup disk, I've done this dozens of times before.  Loaded the CD, opened the burn program, but I get an error message saying that the "device is in use.  Eject disk and try again."

But I cant eject it.  Tried the button, various commands through XP, and rebooted the computer.  Nothing has worked.

Does anyone have any advice on how to eject the disk, short of prying the thing open with a screwdriver?

Thanks in advance.

most cd drives have a small hole in the front. use a paper clip insert in the hole and push gently. it should open the drive

Some drives have a small recessed eject button on the face of the drive or just below. You have to use the end of a paper clip. etc.

It will open right after you power it on before the OS is loaded.

Tried it, didn't work.  Didn't open the straight CD-rom player, either.  But the hole was there.

sometimes you have to feel around in there for the manual eject lever. It IS in there somewhere. Usually recessed about 1/2" or so behind the bezel. sometimes deeper.

I poked around at every angle, but I guess I can try it again.

if that fails there is a little known set of tools us techs use to open them.

hammer and a screwdriver

One of mine is actually VERY far inside. Try using a large paper clip. I keep one bent almost all the way open at my desk hanging from a magnet. Magnets are also GREAT for holding those teensy weensy screws when taking things apart.
