I always loved reading short stories more than long epic novels and want to start reading them again. I found a book on amazon that's a collection of short stories that were turned into Twilight Zone episodes and am looking for more collections like it. I'm not really sure what genera I'm looking for (thinking Sci-Fi/Fantasy), but here are some examples of stories that I loved reading when in the public education system: Harrison Bergeron A Sound of Thunder The Hitch Hiker? (like the Twilight Zone episode) The Most Dangerous Game Some movies that I liked based off short stories: The Box The Adjustment Bureau The Illusionist Field of Dreams The Minority Report I also like more "idea" short stories that get you to think. Just more than entertainment value. Thanks in advance for any help y'all can give. |

Spoke with a friend of mine and he says I'm probably looking for "Speculative Fiction". I found this website and am searching for anthology books: http://www.freesfonline.de/ |

You might like Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse; Edited by John Joseph Adams
Some of the shorts were truly post-apocalyptic but others, most actually, had a sci-fi/speculative edge that I really enjoyed. One thing I really like about the book is the For Further Reading section in the back. The bibliography focuses on books in which post-apocalyptic elements are vital to the story. ETA: Thanks for the link |

Thanks for the recommendation! There was a review on Amazon that gave a brief overview of what some of the stories were about. Sounds pretty cool, bookmarked it. These are others that I bookmarked... http://www.amazon.com/Conmergence-Anthology-Speculative-Tara-Maya/dp/0983107300/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top http://www.amazon.com/Twilight-Zone-Original-Stories/dp/1567310656/ref=pd_cp_b_1 |

If you liked "Harrison Bergeron," do yourself a favor and read the collection "Welcome to the Monkey House." I'm a bit of a Vonnegut fan. I also recommend: Orson Scott Card's "Maps in a Mirror" Dan Simmons' "Prayers to Broken Stones" All of Stephen King's short story collections! (pre-van are the best though...) Poul Anderson also has some great short story collections Ernest Hemingway's "the Complete Short Story Collection" is a must read I think that short fiction is great because it lets the reader draw more conclusions and thus it tends to be more personal and powerful to the reader. |

If you like Zombie fiction you can find a lot of short stories and you can also find a lot of them on the net.
I know one of the best places to look for that type of fiction is Permuted Press they also have a forum on their site that I think a lot of writers post on and they do post their stories. They also have a free section with short stories. I'm hoping to be in the ranks of the published soon with my first novel. I will be in print in a short story collection coming out later this year but it's all zombie stuff with a lot of twist in the endings that will make you think. Good luck on finding the books and try looking at BookMooch great site to join and earn points to get books for free. |

I saw "A Sound of Thunder" on that list –– go back and hit Bradbury hard. Anthologies from the Golden Age. George R.R. Martin did some stuff in his "Aces Wild" series back in the '90s using different writers to contribute different chapters/characters in the books. Harlan Ellison's Dangerous Visions. |

I'm the same way, I LOVE short stories. If you like Sci-Fi you really need to check out David Brin's collections- River of Time and Otherness. I'm reading Tomorrow Happens right now and am not as enthusiastic about it as I was about the other 2. They have some really really good sci-fi stories in them, great stuff. In fact, if you have a Kindle or an e-reader I could email them to you as I have them in mobi format. |

Look for Rod Serling's Twilight Zone collections. He wrote many of the episodes and also penned short story versions of them. I have three or four of his books, but I'm not sure how many there are total.
You'd also probably like the short stories written by: Ray Bradbury Isaac Asimov Henry Kuttner Richard Matheson Philip K. Dick Many of them wrote short stories that Twilight Zone episodes were based on. You might also like Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. Daphne du Maurier's The Birds is great, and eerier than the movie. |

My Mom got me three Twilight Zone books for my birthday: Stories From The Twilight Zone (T.E.D Klein introduction) Twlilight Zone (edited by Carol Serling - 50th Anniversary) Rod Serling's Twilight Zone (Adapted by Walter B. Gibson) I'll be sure to check out those authors. |
