I'm starting to run consistently now, and was wondering if anyone knows a remedy that works to alleviate the pain.  Whenever they get real bad, from several days in a row, I give it a rest for a day or so.  They haven't gone completely away, but are much easier to live with, and I can challenge my body during the run.

I never found any solid solution myself. People all say the same stuff...

Running surface
Shoes
Lower leg exercises
Ice
Thorough warmup and cooldown.
Calf stretches afterwards

I just cut back on running to 2 or 3 days a week. I try to stick to the treadmill and softer surfaces than roads. Sometimes I put an icepack on my shins after running if they feel a little tender.

This is a good article, I do these exercises.

Basically I do all the stuff I listed above simultaneously. I don't know which stuff works but I can keep it under control as long as I don't overdo the mileage.

Shoes.
Go to a hardcore running store wearing your running shoes and tell them your problem. If they ask you to walk, and want to look at the wear patterns on the bottoms of your shoes, you are in the right place. Dig deep and and buy the shoes they recommend. I did this about 5 years ago (and buy the same shoes again and again) and have not had shin splints since.
