Guys, I'm running a Netgear WNR2000 router and have a second WNR2000 that I'd like to configure as a access point, so that I can move my modem out of the computer room. I have 2 hardwired (only) PC's in this room, and I don't see a lot of access points that have more than 1 ethernet connection.
I've attempted to follow some online instructions that I've got, and I've attempted to use the Wireless repeating function on the WNR2000 (doesn't work as near as I can tell, but there is NOTHING in the manual on it, so I can't tell if I'm just doing something wrong...) and hooking up to the second unit that way. Is there some way to do this, or am I going to be stuck buying an adapter for my PC to do this? |

Please explain exactly what you are trying to do. So you have a modem and two wireless routers. You also have two wired computers in the room that are currently connected to one router that is then connected to the modem. I am assuming that you would like to move the modem elsewhere in the house (is it not working where it is?) and have one of the routers plugged into it, and have the second router in the original room with the two desktops. Then you would like to have the modem/router pair send an internet connection via wireless to the router/computers. This can be done and I would HIGHLY recomend that you get DDwrt or a similar firmware installed on the wireless routers beforehand. This will not only give you more features and stability but also allow this to be setup much easier. Check out this thread for info on how to flash it http://dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=446547#446547 and then here is how to get a wireless bridge set up that will still allow additional wireless devices to connect to the network http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge Edit: I use to run a setup similar to this with a pair of linksys wrt54g's and ddwrt and it worked very well. |

You got it - I'll look into those links.
My Modem in my Computer room is on the end of a very long line that is split twice in the walls. I've killed one of the splits, but at the cost of cable in 1 room. I've either got to run a line all the way over (difficult) or move the modem (easier). I have one more thing I want to try before I attempt to flash the firmware, which I assume will void my warranty. That's not a huge problem, but if I can get it done... The WNR2000v2 router has instructions on how to do this in the manual (the v1 router, which I have, does not, but it only supports it with the latest firmware). The other knock on the Netgear software is that it only supports WEP encryption, not WPA. Are there other advantages to flashing the Firmware to the DDwrt? |
