I have an AR that I bought way back in '84 or '85.  The mfg roll mark and serial nummer are readable, but not printed / engraved very deeply into the metal. The serial number is a very small, slim character type font, and not bold & prominent like modern AR makers.

Question:  Is it legal to have the serial number re-engraved into the Lower so that it is more prominent and easily read?

Thanx, tree

As long as you do not deface or alter the original serial number, you can engrave to your heart's content.

I'd advise not touching the original serial number at all for that reason.

Can't figure out a reason to engrave the serial number again however, no matter how much I try.

There is no real reason other than aesthetics.  I probably won't bother, but thinking about it got me to wondering about the legality.  Thanx for the response.
