I think I asked this before, but I can't find the thread now, and I never got an answer.  Does anyone know where I can find Security Doors?  This is for a retrofit to an existing house.  I need a Security door that looks like a standard Residential Door, I'm talking about the actual door NOT a Security Screen Door like Home Depot has.  I'll be putting a Security Screen Door over it, but I need a regular Security Door to.  Also does anyone make Armored Steel Door Frames?, or are Security Doors pre hung?

The problem with a retrofit is the steel door frame has to be integrated into the structure of the house or it'll just get knocked free of the puny 2X4 it's nailed/screwed into.  You'd probably want to tear the entryway out completely and start from scratch on it.

Tagged, my front door is the original 1964 Builder's Special Craptastic Door and I've been thinking about replacing the entire frame & door.

Thank you.  I couldn't even find that in "my topics".

I know, the problem is it's just not in the budget to do more.

The house is all brick though, so that may help.

Saw you got your bid accepted SAC - Congrats!

Key is to also lay low and not advertise that you have guns or anything valuable in the house. I lived not far from where I recall you saying this house was... It's not a horrible area, but you do need to be concerned about the denizens of the craphole directly to your South coming over their borders.

It's possible to have a very nice house that is highly secure. Don't forget about glass block windows for the basement too.

Someone had link for a normal looking door that had 6 safe style pins that went into  the frame and floor. I will try to find it.

Thanks.  The denizens of said 3rd World crap hole are why I'm going to such lengths, and why I'm trying to make the house look "normal", and not like a high value target, it's challenging securing a house, they were just never really designed with Security in mind.  I think I already have the glass block windows there if memory serves.  Now I'm just thinking about some of that 3M film on the Windows, along with some good metal shutters, and Security Doors, and Screen Doors, I think it comes with an alarm system already installed to. I'm open to any other suggestions to.  I'm also planning on the liberal application of thorn bushes to.

Those are great, and I'd like to have something like that, and I've considered it before, but I just have nowhere near the budget for Vault Doors right now.  So I just need a standard Security Door, I'm looking at a budget of only maybe a few hundred dollars per door.

How about those steel replacement doors Home Depot has?  There steel doors (Plastic Core?) [re hung in stamped metal frame inserts, you just remove your existing door, and hinges, and insert the whole unit in to the old jamb, and screw it in place.

The old jamb becomes your weakest point. Short screws in the striker plate and hinges need to be reinforced as well.

This.  You really need a steel frame installed in a reinforced jamb, then you have a solid door platform.  Now what about the rest of the house?  With a hardened entry way your windows become an easy entry point.  You need thick plate glass windows with 3M window film applied to slow down entry.  How about the back door?  needs to be the same as the front door.

With that taken care of, what kind of locks are you going to put on the doors?  Your standard Kwickset or even residential Shlage C keyway locks are now the weakest links.  You will need a locksmith to set you up with either a Medico Bi-axial  or Shlage Primus setup for your house.

Get the picture?

I know, I think you misunderstood.  The doors I'm talking about aren't simply steel covered doors, there pr hung in a steel shell that fastens over the wooden frame, effectively making it one giant lock plate.  I was thinking about installing it with Carriage Bolts, also this attaches to the edge of the frame not the inside, but yes I'd love to have an actual steel frame, that's why I posted this topic, know where I can find one?

As for the windows, see my Security Shutters thread.  The Medico locks are easily picked, the videos are all over you tube, but thanks for telling me about the Primus, do you know where I can get some?, and how much they are?  The backdoor of course is do for an upgrade to.

Durgh.

Wrong thread.

How invasive is it to install these things (door jambs)?  Would my landlord mind?

To actually install a new Jamb?  Very, you would basicly have to tear the wall apart, and re-frame it.  To install a new frame you just remove the old door, and use a pry bar to remove the old frame, then drop in the new frame, and screw it in place, then install a new door, or reinstall the old one, if you get a pre hung door the door instalion part is already done.  It should take you maybe an hour.  To install one of theses new replacement doors I'm talking about, you just remove the old door, leave the old frame, and Jamb alone, set the new door in place, and screw it in, it has a steel insert that covers the weaker wood jamb.  While you have the door out, secure the frame the Jamb with some long Carriage Bolts to help reinforce it, you'll need to countersink them though, that should all take maybe 15 minutes.

I don't know how good those doors are though, that's what I'm trying to find out.
