Has anyone here been to Camp School? I know we have some Scoutmasters or ASMs here. Do any of you have any ideas on how I can train myself and my scoutcraft staff up quickly (1 week for myself, maybe 5 days for my guys)? Games/Competitive ideas would be especially appreciated. I'm new to the department, not to scouting or campstaff-- I went up through aquatics from CIT to head LG, then did a season on COPE, and then council, in its infinite wisdom put me in charge of a completely green scoutcraft department.

my troop's attitude towards training is "come on out with us for a weekend, you'll figure it out". We only send guys to official training for Wood Badge and youth protection (and only youth protection because they said we had to to keep our charter).

Probably not a bad idea for you to go (assuming your district/council are up to snuff) to find out what they latest and greatest rules regarding safety, insurance issues, one-on-one, etc are. I hate to say, I got the feeling my last few years was that if YOU and/or your sponsoring organization failed to follow the rules, Scout Insurance wasn't going to cover you, and if some kid gets hurt or killed, you don't want them to throw you to the wolves. Lots of the old timers, weren't happy about some involving shooting, horses, overnights, etc etc. but getting up to speed on the latest may save YOUR skin. |
Camp school is a program desinged to train staff for summer camp. It is broken down into smaller schools for each area. Shooting sports, aquatics, program, camp ranger, etc. It is not designed to make a scoutmaster better, it is designed to teach staff to run summer camp. Perhaps your council could sent you - at their cost - so you could come back and train the others? When I went as a student it was seven days and six nights. My council paid for mine. It has to be repeated every five years for you to stay current. |
I was going to do Wood Badge this spring but I had to work !
