My idiot son is losing his license due to a DUI. Rather than haul his ass around to and fro, I'm thinking of buying him a scooter.
I have no clue what brands are worth a damn...any suggestions? |

Quoted: Most places you don't need a license for 50cc or less. What was that KrikP quote about operating a Chinese scooter? Thank you google. "Operating a Chinese scooter is the universal way to communicate to law enforcement that you have dope and warrants." I know IL you don't need a license for under 50 CC. |

We've had several Kymco scooters and they have always been dependable and run well. Get a two stroke 50 like the super 9, they are a world faster than the slow Honda stuff. For some reason the Yamaha Zuma is pretty quick for a four stroke 50 and aftermarket parts for it are pretty plentiful since it is so popular.
Your reason for wanting one is for a DUI mobile, though, so maybe your son wouldn't be too interested in hopping it up to be more than a commuter. Another way to look at it is any of the cheaper Chinese scooters would work for a 12 mile round trip to work. I have a friend that has had several and hasn't had any major problems with them. He did say that you absoluteky need to go over the entire thing after you get it to make sure all the bolts are tight and it was put together correctly...once that is done they seem to run pretty well without issue. This same guy delivers pizzas on a Kymco model that actualy has a rear heated box specifically made for it (which is a standard model that is kind of cool) and hasn't had a single problem with it...and it gets a ton of miles on it yearly. |

Bought the Yamaha Zuma 50. I had fun riding it home from the dealer...only to have the wife crash on it when she took it for a spin. She's got a broken arm and the scooter goes back to the dealer on Monday for repairs. Damn dude, when it rains, it pours. I hope for a speedy recovery for your wife. |

I'd rather die then drive another moped....
I did it for 6 months in AZ 22 miles round trip to work on a 50 CC moped, through the AZ monsoons, AZ wind/dust storms, blistering heat.... And all this when the moped would not workk correctly in the first place. I almost died more then a handful of times due to the piece of shit. Only wanted it to save up for an evo that I STILL DONT HAVE. Its not fun going 30 MPH on a 40 MPH road with giant red reck truckers behind you, honking, blowing past you, giving you the bird, while the monsoons rains come down relentlessly, while getting blown into the wall by huge gusts of wind that break your speed down to 20 mph or less..... If i didn't need the cash so bad, I would of EASILY sacrificed the 400$ I made to bring it out to the desert, pack it with tannerite, and BAM. Would be the best day of my life. Take the bus, do yourself a favor. Everytime I see one, I shutter, and be glad I now have a car. Maybe it will teach his not to drive under the influence. |

I did a lot of research a couple months ago when I was considering buying a scooter, and I had it narrowed down to the yamaha zuma or the honda ruckus. So did I. Big selling point for me of the Zuma was the lockable underseat storage, the more aerodynamic styling, and the fact that the Ruckus looks like a minibike some kid slapped together in his garage. |

Quoted: Quoted: Your son gets a DUI and your going to buy him something. Make him walk instead. Yeah, great idea. He works 6 miles from home, often till midnight or later. Sometimes he has to be at work at 5AM. Thanks for your input. Your kid, so do what you want, but 6 miles is nothing on a bicycle. |
