break the glass off a flashlight bulb.
hold the filament to the tip of the match. Connect a battery to the bulb. Filament gets hot, and hopefully before the filament burns out, the match lights. |

Depending on the type of match, you might get it to light by touching it to a drop of sulfuric acid.
(car battery acid) If the match contains potassium chlorate, it should ignite on contact with the acid. |

It doesn't say you can't use heat. get that sucker close enough to a heat source and it will ignite.

Also you don't say how old the project is. If it was a project from before there were safety matches, then it is going to be harder to get to work, as unsafety matches pretty much light if you look at them wrong.

Try using the ignitor from a gas grille or propane lamp.
Personally, I like the Sulfuric acid idea. |

Insert upright into post. Take 10/22 and from 25 yards, graze a bullet across the tip.....
Turn on electric stove and touch tip of match to burner Start car and let heat up....Touch tip of match to exhaust manifold. Put in oven and turn on any temp above 451. Touch to hot light bulb. |

Go back to the 9v battery. Put the match in with some steel wool. Touch the steel wool to the 9v battery contacts... should work.

The trick is to use wire that can't handle the current from the 9v battery.
If you use thick wire, it will pass the current without heating up the wire. Take some stranded copper wire, stripe it down and cut out a nice length of fine hair width strand. Wrap several turns of this around the match head. Now touch the ends to the 9v. Whoosh! |

when I was in science olympiad, we used very fine Nickle chromium wire. We wrapped the wire around the match head, and then connected to a 9 volt battery

Scrape the side of a AA battery near the (-) end until the metal case is exposed. The metal case of an alkaline battery is +. (If you use a NiCad, the polarity is reversed.) Slice some cigarette pack liner paper (the paper/foil stuff) into strips 3/32"wide x 1-1/4" long. Fold those in half with the foil on the inside, and then seperate the strip enough to then touch one end to the negative end of the AA battery and the other end of the paper strip to the exposed battery case. It will heat/flare up enough to light a smoke... or fire up a match. Aren't inmates creative? Stay safe
