There seems to be a few grains of sand in each can. Is this done purposely to mimic homemade chowda? How would sand get in almost every can? Wouldn't the sand sink to the bottom of the massive holding tank prior to pouring into can?

Most clam chowder has sand in the meat.  Clams do that in the wild, and no one has time to tweezer out all the grains.

Yes I realize that, but one glance at the chunks of clam that are in Campbells and it looks like anything but what you see in the wild. This clam looks processed multiple times.

When there was no fowl we ate crawdad.

And when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand.

Clams, oysters, and mussels are all filter feeders....they suck in seawater, and keep anything edible..lots of sand in seawater, so they naturally retain some sand.  If you filter the seawater to get all the sand out first, and put the animals in it for a day or so, there will be much less sand in them.  I accept that they have sand in them.  Because clams also live in the sand, they seem to have the highest amount of retained sand, oysters the least...that has been my experience at least.

Campbell's has some good stuff, but clam chowder isn't one of them.  It's probably the worst of the canned chowder.
